Supreme Commander Demo - 5:30pm GMT Today!!!

Ok this is my system.

Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Geforce 7800GTX
AMD64 3500
2GB DDR Memory

Here comes my problem.

NO ******* SOUND.

lol anyone else getting no sound with their demo ?

All other games/demo's I get sound except this one ?

Ok I've been playing through the campaign level and I just realised why its running so slow right from the start. The map is actually much larger than what you initially see and it only gets bigger if you complete the mission objectives, so the game engine is probably computing/rendering a lot more units than you can actually see on screen. The game is also mostly CPU limited because running at the lowest settings make little difference.

To test this, try running a skirmish map and you'll see that its is much smoother (60+ fps) at the start. Even half way into battle with almost 50 gunships assaulting the enemy base I was still getting 20+ fps which is pretty good if you ask me!

I've been playing for a bit now and apart from the different graphics engine and minor UI niggles I can gladly say this is definitely TA class gameplay! :D

just got round to finishing it,

I may be missing something but i hate the camera view, its nice having such a big zoom but it there anyway to tilt it and make it stay (ah la COH), i know you can rotate by holding the spacebar but it always springs back.

Also on the camera its almost impossible to see what air units are doing, you cant tilt and stay above them, you tilt from ground level up.....

Also i found myself playing most of the game almost totally zoomed out, missing all the nice battles, it was the only way i could effectively move my units around on such large maps, I thikn they aimed big and went too big !

The game looks impressive but im getting the feeling that the videos shown in previews dont represent actual gameplay(may be AI vs AI) im sorry you just cant stop and look at the nice missiles hitting targets, and take a break to watch a battle, Its constant build, build, build.

Shame as it looks so nice..... pre-order cancelled.....for now.

I've got an Athlon XP2800+ and it doesn't run too bad. I've got most of the settings on medium or high and I'm playing it at 1440x900. I've not noticed any slowdowns but I've only played it for half an hour or so.

Regarding the actual game, I'm not very impressed with it so far. It seems very bland.

Sadly I get about 1fps with everything low when theres more than five units around :(
Thats with 1gb ram, 5900lx, Athlon 2500... Ah well have to wait till I upgrade later in the year :(

Slightly better than minimum spec. Had to force validation too for some odd reason

You need to give it more time and more specifically learn to use the queuing (holding shift key) to its maximum. I experienced the exact same issues when I first played TA and didn't realise exactly how important the queue system really was. The game allows you to queue nearly everything in the game in hundreds of different combinations; it would be impossible to have large epic battles without it.

If you play the game how its meant to you should have a system where you have factories constantly building units and sending them direct to battle with squads of construction units constantly building power plants and mass generators to meet the power demands. This needs to be continuous process hence the queue system.

For example I usually have about three aircraft factories, each with about 8 construction units (tech 3 engineers?) helping out. These factories are queued up with 30+ units (e.g. gunships) that are set to automatically fly out and patrol the frontlines. Aircraft like bombers can be set to land or patrol in a loop in a safe area. The same approach goes for building other types of units or even buliding structures. In the case of bulding structures its better to have lots of engineers building one structure at a time than building several building at the same time.

When you think its time to push the frontline forward, just select one of your aircraft (e.g. gunships) and press ctrl+z, then tell them to patrol further in.

Hehe, looks a long way off that I must say. Can't say I'm loving this demo - don't think I've got the patience for it! Everythings far too slow - it's like playing Eve Online or something ;) Much prefer the get up and go of Company of Heroes etc

Too true! Can't wait for the new C&C either! Oh, and that other one by the Ground Control people - that looks very good (World in Conflict).

Thanks for the tips, i know i missed out on a lot by not following the beta closely, i havent given up on it yet, but the demo will suffice for me just now, I can go play with the camera angles and the other keys now.

BTW i was a massive TA fan at the time and couldnt put it down back in the day, I suppose i was expceting this to be another step up, but im getting a vibe that says "Im TA 10 years later" Graphics asside it isnt too much different from the original series.

Gameplay makes or breaks a game, not fancy graphics and huggggggggggeeeeee maps.

I'm sure a lot of dual screeners are interested in this . . here's my input:

Firstly my setup consists of:

E6300 @ 2.8ghz atm
2GB Crucial 10th anniversary
Asus P5B Deluxe
ATI X1950XT

Screens = Dual Dell 2007WFP's with a combined res of 3360 X 1050

Now I put it on max resolution, highest settings and I got fps of arounds 20-28 constantly. In huge explosions it would drop to 16 or similar. It becomes laggy in the scenes where your commander dies otherwise it's playable imo. Not exactly smooth as most games but considering the HUGE amount of space it's amazing to see it run at something playable!

Onto the navigation itself, I like how you can remotely access parts of the map you want on each screen, it's very simple as you can have an ariel view of all your strategic points whilst deploying troops on the other screen. The screen itself moves around fairly easily. The problems that I do have is that when you hover the right you have to move all the way to the second screen and that then moves the second screen and not the first. So in order to move right you have to practically use the scroll wheel. You soon get used to it but I feel that could become a barrier for new users over time, it does get some getting use to.

I think the ability to monitor 2 things at once is superb, it does that and it does it well. when both screens are zoomed in for detail the frames do drop by about 4fps so nothing substantial.

Time for some pictures:

A screenshot itself (sorry I had to resize as the size was huge!):
