2nd 980 ti or a single 1080 ti?

Sup, we all know the 1080 ti will be here eventually and I've always had ti's. 560ti, 780ti, 980ti and now soon the 1080ti... Or so I think.

Seeing how SLI is slowly being shunned out, you think it will be best to go single 1080ti when it comes out?

I only game at 1440p. And my current 980ti is doing DAMN good at it. But obviously, latest and greatest and all that

I'm not asking in terms of specs, just how sli is being treated by Nvidia.

I plan to go 1440 and have a single 980ti now. Further down the line I plan to see how vulkan and dx12 treat a couple in sli and if it's well for big games I'll buy a 2nd hand 980ti, then look at how Volta performs. By the time the 1080ti is out I can see 980tis going for great prices, but also not dropping further (as no new cards) for a while.

Personally I would wait for the 1080ti, I wouldn't assume that SLI is going to be supported so would go with the best single card you can get. Or just keep the 980ti until the card after the 1080's. I think that's what I may do.

for 2560x1440 id just wait for the 1080ti, if you need more firepower.

If gaming at 1440p 16:9 i would probably stick with one 980Ti for the foreseeable, until you come across that one game that needs a bit more, then think about it.

In the last 5 or so years I've also gone the Ti route and always gone SLI in the end. I was on one 980Ti at 1440p but then got the x34 monitor and with 3440 x 1440 at 100Hz - one 980Ti doesn't cut it so got another.
On my X99 rig 980Ti SLI with the X34 is bloody great! I have far fewer issues (mainly 'stutter' related) that I experienced with my previous SLI setups. There are very few games now that I play that have any issues with SLI either. Off the top of my head Just Cause 3 is the only one I have that flat out doesn't work with SLI, but it runs really well on just one card anyway with Gsync, so it's not the end of the world. I will definitely be skipping the 1080 gen.

For 16:9, I would just wait it out. By the sounds of it your 980Ti is doing a steller job, just got to resist the shiny (which is hard I know

If the Titan Pascal is already cut down, will we even see a 1080Ti this gen? I do wonder.

Having said that, I still find SLI works perfectly fine in most cases. Some titles granted its not support and three / four way SLI does not work with 1080's which sucks, but two way SLI still works fairly decently in most big titles.

The original Kepler Titan was cut-down, and then the 780 Ti was the full chip. It will happen again, unless we don't get a 1080 Ti at all for some reason.

So it'll either be 3840 core 1080 Ti, or non-existent. One or the other.

Seeing as the Pascal cards have better DX12/Vulcan support and your 980ti isn't struggling today the smart move is to wait, Your games are running fine so why bother spending money on the same tech that's no longer cutting edge.

The 780ti and Titan Black released because of Hawaii, If AMD can't compete with Pascals Tx they won't need to push a full chip out the door. They're more likely to do a 780 with less cores but better clocks and coolers. That way they are using up all the wasted chips.

Just get an AMD rx 460 mate, their cards are so well optimised for Vulkan that one will easily beat a 1080ti /s

Same, Volta is going to be the real DX12 card, Pascal is better than maxwell in dx12, but not AMD good if you know what I mean.

If they cut the chip even more than the Titan XP, then it'll be barely faster than the 1080.

3328 cores would only be ~25% faster if it could hit 2.1 GHz like the 1080's can. And if the stock clocks were ~1600 MHz it would look very bad in reviews, only being ~15% faster than a stock 1080.

If they're going to bring out a 1080 Ti at all it'll be 3840 cores.

exactly my thoughts, the 1080 Ti if their will be one is going to be a card to get Nvidia out the **** if AMD pull something out of their *** the next card to launch will be a fully fledged GP102 card, get it to 2ghz and oh boy then we'll see a 4k GPU as right now based a few benchmarks I've read this new titan falls shorts
