Which would be the best of the two to upgrade from a 9600GT.

Other point is there any need to if my games are playing fine, or should future proof it with one of the two above cards.

(future proof to a newer card/this one dies)

Save a little more and go for a gtx 460..

+1

5770 has better future compatibility than the GTX260 but is marginally slower over a range of games if you compare 10.5+ cats against 256+ GeForce. Personally I'd say the GTX460 is much more worth it than either of these 2.

I only occasionally game maybe a few nights during the week and some photoshop work, is there really any point me spending the big money on the 460/480 cards ?

At the minute BFBC2, call of duty MW and MOH Beta :P love it .

£160 + for a 460
£130 + for a 5770

thanks for feedback so far :)

For MW2/COD4 the GTX460 leads hands down, for BC2/MOH its a mixed story with quite a bit better performance at lower resolutions but only very slightly faster at 1920x and higher res.

BFBC2,MOH both use the same Engine, so running a 480 you could max the game settings which Supports 32XCSAA and have no hit on Fps over 16AA well a couple of fps but you will not see it at all (this is at 1920x1080 which i am running at), PQ looks fantastic as well :D

photoshop is a very powerful Program , so Better the system = better photoshop, the extra memory on the card will help.

it is down to money at end of day, but the thing is you run some games that will use the card and Software programs that will use the card, even though your not using system much.. a confusing dilemma.

I normally play at 1920 x 1080, and normally, id love to see the eye candy increase in graphics performance, but just unsure which to go for.

Cheers for feedback

The HD5770 is fastest by a decent margin, but you can pick up a HD5830 for £140 ish now.

The 5770 isn't faster than the GTX460 by a decent margin, it isn't even faster than the GTX260 by a decent margin... at best its on par - often slower:

its only that one flawed TPU review that says otherwise - sure theres the odd time its faster but the overwhelming majority of the time its on par or slower.

From an avid ATI fanboy and the starter of the "official" 5830 thread, I'd get the GTX460 if I were you. :p

Going to go against the flow and say 5770 _if_ you have a crossfire capable mobo (2x 16lane PCIE1 or 8 lane PCIE2).

£/performance is slightly better on the 5770, but you want 'futureproofing'. at 1080p the 5770 would be ok this year, but wouldnt want to suggest it would last well into next year.

Sooo thats why peeps are recommending a 460.
Buuut... its not £130+ vs £160. Its £125 vs £180.

Much better to buy a 5770 and another when you want next year. Even if the ATI refresh later this year makes current cards seem bad value, all it will mean is that 2nd hand 5770s wont cost as much for you to crossfire. 2x 5770 performance = 5870 and that level of speed wont be old hat until 28nm late next year.

Buy the 5770 if you really want to stick to a smaller budget [and can crossfire later]. The 460 costs 45% more, and only delivers 20-25% better performance.

riight - so a myriad of different benchmarks from all over the web are all wrong? (keep clicking through each review and look at the others on those sites all show the same story).

Whereas one "unbias" review that uses the commonly acknowledged slowest performing driver of all recent nVidia releases is right? I will say it again and anyone who regularly updates their nVidia drivers can probably confirm - its pretty well known that 195/196 nVidia drivers are in the main pretty rubbish and not a patch on 191.xx and 197+.

How many times have you lost this argument now...

I'll condense it down because I CBA going through it again.

HD5770 punnes GTX260 / End.
