Do you know if the new UK 80GB PS3 will ever have backwards compatibility?

Hi Guys,

I am thinking of getting the MGS4 PS3 80GB bundle from the USA as it won't be released in Europe. This PS3 has both PS1+PS2 backwards compatibility. But i just found out that this PS3 does not have hardware compatibility. Is this true?

I heard it is using software emulation that allows it to play 70% of PS1+PS2 games. That's actually a lot of games out of the thousands that have been released from both previous playstation systems.

Now i am thinking as this MGS4 bundled PS3 does not have hardware emulation then what if the current 40GB PS3 in the UK can get software emulation as well. I know that this has been what a lot of fans have wanted ever since they announced the 40GB would not have PS1+PS2 compatibility.

Sony have just announced that the 40GB would be discontinued in the UK and replaced with the same system but a 80GB hard drive now. This new system will be sold at the same price. It's strange they have not listened to their fans to release a system in the UK that has backwards compatibility. The demand is very high, and is what is causing a lot of people wanting to import one which does have backwards compatibility.

I wonder if sony do have plans via their future firmware patches to add software emulation to this new 80GB PS3 that's been announced in the UK. This system is different as well to the MGS4 bundle from the USA as it only has 2 USB 2.0 ports and no SD card reader. But Nyko have just released a special USB plug like device which fits into one of the PS3 40GB slots and adds a SD card reader, and two extra USB 2.0 ports now giving it 4 USB2.0 ports.

Now all is needed is software emulation and the UK PS3 becomes the ultimate cheap system with all the features of their American counterpart providing you buy the Nyko device which i forgot to mention it's been created to blend in with the fashion of the PS3 stylish look.

I wonder if Sony would release their own device like the Nyko one. Then people have the option to buy this device to make their PS3 more like the original PS3's that were discontinued in the European Market.

Does anybody know if software emulation is possible, it should be as the MGS4 bundle does it, it contains absolutely no hardware such as the emotion engine in the PS2.

Any help much appreciated

Many thanks in advance

so PS1 games can work on the new announced UK 80GB PS3, but PS2 games may be able to play via a download from the PS2 store, so that means it would use software emulation.

All i want to play is the metal gear trilogy on this new announced UK 80GB PS3.

Also do you know why Sony is not putting into this 80GB box the new dualshock 3 controller. Are they still waiting till the European markets sell all their current standard analogue controllers non rumble?

You won't be able to play PS2 games on it. Not untill they announce some kind of emulation software, which is doubtful. I have a 60gb BC model, so I can play PS2 games on my PS3 no problem. :) Go me.

They are.

Personally I don't think there's any chance of backwards compatibility coming to the existing PS3s Europe has, whether they're 40GB or 80GB. Whether or not Sony decide to add it to a new version later down the line, I don't know, but it just doesn't seem like it's a priority to them now. Certainly wouldn't complain if they did add PS2 compatibility via an update, but it doesn't seem like something they would do.

all i want to play is the metal gear solid series on my ps3, especially metal gear solid 2 sons of liberty will that not be possible

No, the U.S. 80gb model as was, and is in the MGS4 bundle is the same hardware as our 60gb model, it has the gpu from the ps2 but not the "emotion engine" despite it being listed as such it is not entirely software emulation.

The latest 80gb units are the same hardware as the 40gb unit with no ps2 hardware in them at all => no backwards compatibility.

See above re: US 80gb =/= UK 80gb

Also one final point, although PS3 games are region free the PS2 emulation is not, so a US 80gb unit will not play PAL PS2 games.

What is the expected release date for these? A guy at work wants one so the info would be great

27th August, not too long now. The PlayTV addon comes out on the 10th September which adds PVR functionality to the PS3 (dual freeivew tuners) and the ability to record even whilst playing games (maybe also from standby but that's not confirmed).

I found this site that is a PS2 emulator for the PC, i don't know how legal this is, it's called pcsx2. It was able to successfully emulate many PS2 games on a PC. It's a bit old but people are still working on it. I tried getting into their forums, but it's not working. I would like to post there, if it's anyone i think they could make some kind of emulation for the PS3. People say that pcsx2 was emulating PS2 hardware on a PS3. all through software. Now this could easily be done on a PS3. With perfect results.
