Hello all,

just thought I'd make this post to clear some things up. Firstly in case you didn't know the nVIdia Geforce 8800GT has been updated with a new and improved cooler.

The original 8800GT featured a single slot cooler that didn't appear to work very well, in some examples the card would reach 100°C which is not desirable. It seems the fan itself was a little too small and the fan logic (the bit that controls its speed) didn't react until the card was almost melting (well not quite but 100°C is pretty toasty).

Anyway I have one of the new cards here and have put it through the grueling Fur Test for 10 mins of super load while using RivaTuner to measure temps and control the fans speeds (except in *auto* test).

The actual screenshots from Rivatuner are included for your geeky pleasure and the results are put into simple graph form at the end of the post. . .

Conclusion: Nice Work nVidia, you finally got the 'silent' single slot cooler right. It's nice to know that anyone can plug one of these new cards in and it will run properly right out the box. As you can see from the results there is no need to use RivaTuner anymore to regulate the fan speed, it just works properly. What's also interesting to note is the 'new' single slot cooler works better out the box than the 'new' double slot cooler featured on the 8800GTS 512MB?

I had my doubts about the whole 'single-slot' business but having used the 'new' 8800GT featuring the improved cooler I am happy to report that all systems are go, The single slot cooler has come of age! :)

Is it less noisy at higher speeds too?
Yes its a lot quieter than the original cooler, bigger fan and slower rpms. At 65% the new cooler is spinning at approx 1300rpms vs 60% on the old cooler that was spinning at over 3000rpms, thats a big difference.

Is it pot luck or are they all new cooler designs shipping now?
Its hard to say but I think all the Beta 8800GT's have sold out long ago? stands to reason that all the current cards feature the new cooler?

Nice to see its a reality
Yes it is but it begs the question Why no official comment from nVidia? Are they trying to avoid a load of people returning their old cards for a replacement?

Which cards specifically have the new coolers?
As mentioned above its more than likely a standard feature on all new shipping cards? I bought mine just before xmas (Inno3D OC version) and that came with the updated cooler.

Hopefully people who have bought a 8800GT recently can confirm what cooler their cards came with?

I'm about to get a RMA on my POV 8800GT and I'm getting it replaced with a Leadtek. Will this card come with a revised fan as it doesn't say anything different on the etailers website? (competitor)

Do they come as standard now?

Good work btw Wayne, interesting report :)

Hi mishima, I am led to believe that all the latest cards feature the new cooler but as always some user feedback from recent 8800GT buyers would help confirm this.

The Beta 8800GT featuring the feeble coolers were manufactured in smallish quantities by Foxconn which all sold out. Now the new cards are all being 'mass' produced by Flextronics so it stands to reason they should all have the new and improved cooler :)

Hi, thats good news then, so presumably the stock listed will feature the new coolers and all the old coolers have already been sold batches ago. I wonder how many RMA's those coolers have caused? I think my RMA will be rather quick tbh, they will take one look and realise !

I think its funny that people laughed at me for freaking out at the temps, there were only one or two people that agreed with me that they wouldn't be happy having their 8800GT hitting over 90°C

Anyhow as you may be able to see from this thread the new coolers are wicked, good benefit for everyone in general but people who want to run a pair of these in SLI will be happy, on the old cards there was no way to control the fan speed on both cards in a SLI setup.

These 'new' single slot coolers are now perfect for SLI actually :)

I don't understand the results look no better than the old cooler ? or not by much ? i seem to recall the same load temps on my bfg old cooling 75c @ 70 % fan speed.

The GT used to take the temps of the BETA must have been one of those faulty ones that seems to be going around.

My GT never gets to 95 and I got the old cooler.
Run the test for me please Will . . .

I don't understand the results look no better than the old cooler ?
Well the first thing is that the new cooler is self automating, it speeds up the fan according to load, the second thing is that the fan is a lot quieter than the old version.

I planning on doing that later.

Umm it speeds up according to load? So must be a core modification too or bios?
