Just got a Samsung SH-B083L/BSBP blu ray rom and dvdrw drive and had nothing but problems with the supplied cyberlink powerdvd software.

Is there any decent blu ray software players, preferably free? I was suprised VLC doesn't support blu ray.

There are no free solutions, these companies have to pay to licence the Blu-Ray format for playback, the only free way is the illegal way. Unless you want to pay for Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 3 which is probably the best Blu-Ray playback software available.

If I remember correctly, is there not an update for that version of PowerDVD (off the manufacturer's website) to enable you to watch blu-rays without issues...

I had the same issues, just bit the bullet and got TMT3 and haven't looked back. Had crazy issues with the SimHD feature (supposedly not supported for my 5xxx gfx card) so if you can get it cheaper without it, go for it.

Just looked at AnyDVD is it worth it? it just seems like a player that gets past dvd regions

It's not a player, it removes regions / protection / HDCP on the fly

I bought mine ages ago for dvds

It should prompt you for the update when you load the software.

There may also be a firmware update for your drive
