New kit. cant get it to POST

agh,

anyone have any ideas?

just had delivered a gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H (b grade ocuk stock) , phenom 840 and Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

just replaced it all in my HTPC and cannot get any life out of it... well fans all come on etc but nothing displayed. even holding power button doesnt turn it off.

any ideas?! :(removed gfx card , moved ram about but nope:(
 
Use the onbaord gpu? to test, making sure to connect monitor to the actual board.

Addition cpu power inserted next to the socket?

Does the GFX you removed need additional power inserted?

Did you insert it in the top 16X slot if theres more than one?

Try clearing the CMOS?
 
tried onboard.. removed all pci cards. nope
additional cpu power? i see a ATX 12V 2X4 connector but my psu doesnt have a connector for that (its a 430watt psu which i used in previous AM2+ configuration)
cmos cleared
 
It will need that power for the motherboard, its there for a reason.

A 430watt PSU is a strange figure, is it a Corsair CX430?
 
grr doh stupid me i plugged in the 4pin square connector thing into theat atx 12v 2x4 slot (even that its a 8 pin socket) and it posts.


although bios whinging about ddr in "unganged mode" whatever that means!?
 
You be fine with the 4 pin in, can't remember what the unganged memory means, there are 2 options, my AMD setup has this.
 
i've got them in slot 3 and 4
as per notes on site for the mobo
"To reach DDR3 1800MHz or above, you must install two memory modules and install them in the DDR3_3 and DDR3_4 memory sockets."
 
isit showing the full amount when the BIOS boots up? are they both pushed firmly home so the tabs grab the ends of the sticks?

Try slots 1+2?
 
You can change this in the BIOS, check page 41:

DCTs Mode
Allows you to set memory control mode.
Ganged Sets memory control mode to single dual-channel.
Unganged Sets memory control mode to two single-channel. (Default)

My Asus has a similar option.
 
Ganged mode is 1x128bit dual channel and unganged mode is 2x64 bit dual channel. Unganged mode should be faster.

Dual-channel was originally conceived as a way to maximize memory throughput by combining two 64-bit buses into a single 128-bit bus. This is retrospectively called the "ganged" mode. However, due to lackluster performance gains in consumer applications as discussed above, more modern implementations of dual-channel use the "unganged" mode by default, which maintains two 64-bit memory buses but allows independent access to each channel, in support of multithreading with multi-core processors.
