Hi all,

My little bro has been quite sick over the last few months and it's meant he has missed school however, he has been doing work from home to try and keep up. He has always struggled with school due to various reasons and has had to give 110% just to keep up.

As he is probably going to be off for some time yet we all thought we would get him a console to keep him busy and as a reward for extra work. Question is, 360 or PS3?

I know there is a massive price difference and my brothers all want to get him the 360, however I was leaning more towards the PS3 due to free online play, thinking it may give him a bit more interaction with others, even if it is just to shoot them :D

I've a 360 and they are great, but I have never used a PS3 and was after people's opinions on them. I've heard varying reports about them being just as unreliable as 360's.

If you where a 13 year old boy, stuck at home which would you rather have, a 360 or PS3? and why?

360, games are dirt cheap and lots of good ones out there, controller is much better than the outdated PS3 pad and live isn't all that expensive.

PS: This is how console wars start.

The 360 is really the most obvious choice without much needed to be said.

As you said though, the PS3 at least as free online play, even if some games and the service isn't as polished as Xbox Live.

Also, there is the option of the PS3 being a DVD/Blu-Ray movie player, so your little brother can watch some nice movies. Assuming he also has a decent TV to go with it :D.

And whatever the varying reports are, the PS3 is still a hell of a lot more reliable than the 360 most of the time.

If it turns in to a typical flame war dokko I will just request that a Don close the thread :)

Yeah, the little so and so has a 32" 720P TV in his bedroom that he used to play his Wii on. Wii has been gathering dust since he hasn't the energy to use it!

depends on what system he will prefer the exclusives on.

For your initial outlay the 360 is cheaper, but tbh, the 360 hasn't got much over the PS3 anymore if price isn't really an issue.

Id let him look at the games tbh and choose which one he prefers, both systems have a fair amount of decent titles now so the decision isnt so clear cut anymore. The 360 is a lot cheaper tbf but its sweet not having to bother with costs to play online etc as well.

I'd get him a 360. Just make sure you don't let him use your credit card to buy a bunch of stuff from the marketplace.

Personally i love my PS3 but i see no real advantage at the moment over the xbox 360, if he is just planning on playing games.

Xbox 360 is cheaper to buy so I would probably go with that as a present.
If you think he will want to watch Blue Rays then get him a PS3.
Alternately get him what his mates have.

Each controller is only slightly different so I still, not being a fanboy, see no advantage with either controller.

I have both, but I would go for a ps3, its more reliable.
But at the end of the day, it all depends on what games you want to play. And what you want to get out of it.
They both have their pros and cons. The ps3 maybe dearer but it comes bundled in with more.
Controller wise, i used to hate the 360 one with a passion when i first got it. It took me a while to get used to it. But after the initial first meeting, i became to love the pad. It truly is awesome. I also love the simplicity of the PS3 pad. It's a perfect fit for my hands, quite glad they didn't do a mass redesign on it :).

Get him whatever his friends have

There is little price difference between them in most cases so i wouldnt use that as a decider as it sounds like you would pay for his live subs anyway

Probably make me unpopular on this forum but a 360 can be modified to play backups if he is genuinely short on cash, the PS3 cant if that is a decider for you

Hmm Im might sound like a ****** but if he struggles at school and has to put additional effort in, surely a distraction like a console is a pretty bad move?

Surely having access to one (I assume either yourself or the other siblings might be at the same home) is enough? Especially as I guess its unused during school/work hours while others are out. At most its the cost of a seperate XBL account...

Am confused...

Do 13 year olds really care about blu ray? When I was 13 I was happy watching VHS on a 14" TV.

Get him a 360.
You didnt have laser discs like the rest of us?:p

ps3ud0

yeah but the ps3 will be that reliable that he will still have it when hes 18-21 and then he will be interested in blu rays

How do you know? Sure the PS3 doesn't **** up as much as the 360 but I have heard about a lot of people on these forums with faulty PS3's. Pretty alarming considering not all that many people own them here too.

I'm not too convinced on how well the PS3 will last yet, I've had 2 die myself.
