Although the initial plan was to introduce the new high-end X38 chipset at the end of September, Intel's new silicon chip is up to the task even earlier, and a new release date has actually been announced. AMD will launch Barcelona on September 10 and Intel is simply going to get the upper hand and launch the X38 on September 9. Motherboards powered by the X38 are expected to hit the stores early next month.

:)

that is the best news i've been waiting for, all year!

*ditches any plan of buying p35, and going to order a x38 once reviews releases*

Hope this isn't too silly a question, but in what ways will this board improve upon those currently available?

It's the replacement for the 975 chipset in the same way as the P35 replaced the 965. Main changes are DDR3 support, twin 16x (electrical as well as physical) PCIe slots and PCIe 2.0. It'll likely be paired with the IHC9R southbridge for SATA ports galore.

I'm expecting these boards to cost a small fortune when they are released? Best to wait till end of year?

I did read that Gigabyte are intending to release 'value' board based on this chipset, which must be good news, as well as others with more on-board goodies.

Around the same price as currenty P35 boards I think.

Probaiblly value boards first but I hope some 'enthusiast' boards come out pretty sharpish. :)

I did read a while ago that the DFI board will be available from day 1, How true this is would be anyones guess!

It would be good, but unlikely as they are a second tier supplier (unlike Asus and Gigabyte which are first tier, and get their boards out first).

Any chance of getting the X38 onto a microATX board? Or is there a similar microATX board chipset coming out around the same time?

I heard that the high end X38 boards would be released first, with the cheaper boards following in several months.

The X38 chipset is designed for the enthusiast market after all.

High end boards will mostlikely be ddr3 only so it would be unwise for the manufacturers to release high end only. For this reason I think that we will see all version of the boards more or less from the release date.

I'm personally looking forward to the IX38 Quad GT :)
