Canon EF 50mm f1.8 MKI better then mk2?

Yeah the MKI is better, the big differce is build quality. The old MKI lens features a metal mount and has a solid construction while the build quality of the new MKII lens is pretty sloppy (plastic mount etc).

The MKI is very sought after, therefore you won't lose much money if you decide to sell it.

Personally I have a 50mm f1.8 Mk1, and I actually don't think it's worth the extra money (I didn't pay the extra, I found it cheap). It has a distance scale and a metal mount, both of these I'm not bothered about on such a cheap lens anyway. The only thing that is worth paying the extra for is the focus ring is a bit nicer, but for me it would not have been worth £42. I thnk that the new lens has a revised (quieter) motor too, my Mk1 lens does whirr abit when focusing. (just like all AF lenses did in the old days :))

If you are looking at a new price of £90, then the the £10 difference would be worth spending for the better resale price.

As far as I am aware, both lenses are optically identical.

VERY true, and I believe the MK1 might have more blades, and there is also a distance meter.

For the same price I would get the MK1, but the Mk2 is a bargain anyway. £80 for a prime lens that is comparable to a L Glass, what more can you ask for ?
