Hi,

Dunno if this may help anybody.

I was having the above trouble last night (7 fps!) and found that the PCIe was running at 1x instead of 16x.

Tried the usual re-installing drivers, etc. to no avail. Then I dropped the fsb from 425 to 400 and BINGO! 16x PCIe came back!

Now getting 10,500+ in 3DMark06 :)

Still fiddling with the rest of the system, but at least that problem is solved.

Cheers.

E6600 @ 3420 MHz (380 fsb, 1.45v, lapped IHS)
Arctic Freezer Pro
AS5
2Gb GeIL DDR2-800 Low Latency
Asus Commando
OcValue 8800 GTS 640Mb @600/2000
WD Raptor 150Gb
Old SuperMicro Full Tower Server Case
433W Enermax PSU

The above is not yet confirmed stable (only ran Orthos for 10 mins and it reached 60 Deg.)

Otherwise it seems good - 1M SuperPi in 14 seconds.

I'm kinda new to overclocking (played about a bit a few years ago, but now having a proper go :p ).

I've plenty more tinkering to do, so we'll see how it goes.

PCI-E dropping to 1x when overclocking is a well known bug with Asus P965 boards.

To make it stop happening, raise your PCI-E frequency to 110MHz.

Do you overclock your CPU manually via the BIOS or are you using a tool like nTune? My CPU doesn't go higher than 2.9 using nTune. DOn't know enough to start fiddling about in the BIOS. Not sure about volts, ram timings etc etc.

Manually using the bios.

The main things to beware of are too high voltages and HEAT! You may also corrupt your OS *cough* as I did last night when I got carried away going for 3.8 GHz...

Like I said, I'm new to this game, still got loads to learn :)

I had 1.6v on the NB and 1.7v on the SB. (what's the best way to improve the cooling on the NB/SB, bearing in mind the Commando uses a heatpipe for cooling?).

I'm just exploring the different options of which, as you know, there are many.

Cheers

What's a safe voltage to use then? Do i just lock the PCI-E and raise the FSB by tiny increments? Do I need to fiddle with Ram timings as well?

Well, as a newbie, I'm probably not the most expert on this ;) but here goes:

CPU - depends on cooling (max 60 degC under load) 1.5v for C2D's seems to be widely accepted as the limit on Air.

Memory: Again, depends the the brand my GeIL is rated to 2.3v, but check first! Timings depend on the make/model. Higher spec modules seem to have a very loose SPD setting so they'll work, but you'll have to manually try different settings to get the most from them.

Chipset settings depend on the board, Bios version and probably other things that I don't know about yet!

I would say your best bet is to have a snuffle around the forum for other setups like yours and be reasonably careful when you experiment - small steps are usually better than huge leaps into the unknown.

Cheers.
