Last time that car was mentioned on here it was slated.

It's apparently rather slow...

surely the 2.5L V6 cant be all that bad?

i have heard they quite nippy!!

anyway, it cant be any slower than my Fiesta 1.25 Zetec :)

Why would we want to own one? Anyone who has owned a rubbish car obviously didn't do their homework*

*awaits flaming for that one..

Quite nippy? its 170bhp in a car that weighs about 8 tonnes :D

Its the Mazda MX6 in really naff clothes tbh, the engine can get a fault where it makes a really loud knocking noise. Its something to do with the timing belt, it will never cause any problems are magor failure but it is very very loud!!

If you want something like that go for a Mazda MX6, its nicer looking and a fully loaded one with leather, climate, cruise etc can be had for well under a grand - still naff though.

Rubbish. American car for the American market.

Thought it was a Mazda design actually - if I remember correctly it was based on the Mazda GD platform for the 1st Gen cars and then the GE for the 2nd Gen, like the MX-6.

***edit***

great advice beat me to the punch on the MX-6 fact :)

The man speaketh the truth!!

Cars that dont sell well dont sell for a reason - because they are crap. the only people who buy them are the ignorant and those who feel they are getting a bargain because of the huge discounts they get offered to take one because no-one is daft enough to own one.

My Dad's girlfriend has a 2.0 one. It's just a distinctly average 90's coupe. It cost her £400, has never gone wrong, and looks quite pretty on the drive. It's pretty uninteresting to drive but then so are most FWD tourer coupe's.

Can't go wrong for £400 I suppose. The most I'd even consider paying for one is £800. I've not owned or driven one but a good friend of mine had one for over a year and his opinions on it aren't really suitable for posting on a 'family forum' :p.

As cars become cheaper and cheaper the fact they absolutely suck becomes less of an issue becuase when you spend a few hundred tops on a car, condition is more important than what it actually is.

For example, if I had £2000 to spend on a car, I'd want something decent. I would, therefore, never buy a Vauxhall Vectra, as they are absolutely rubbish.

However, if I was spending £150 and someone said 'Got a Vectra ere', it would be given consideration becuase... its a 150 quid car. It's not ever gonna be anything special.

Perhaps the same is true of the Probe now its depreciated to a near worthless state.

As already said, it's the sister car to the MX6.
Avoid the 2ltr, tried one, lousy gruff engine.
On a positive light, the 2.5 sounds nice, whilst not being that pokey. A 200SX would blow it into the weeds, and is also rwd (therefore far more fun to drive). The Probe is not that bad a drive, and does fairly well. Consider it as not that different to say the Hyundai Coupe 2.7, i.e. not a great car, certainly not bad and makes a nice change from a more normal Ford.
If you can get one for a really cheap price, worth considering. If I had the money and wanted a coupe, I'd be looking at a 200SX again.
