Well yesterday I finaly built my PC, no problems to report and pics will be up this weekend, but I ran into one small snag.

The Sunbeam CPU cooler I bourght won't fit, there is at least a 1cm gap between the metal conntector on the heatsink and the clip on the Mobo.

My mobo is an MSI 790FX-GD70 (AM3)

So, can any suggest a good CPU cooler for my Phenom II 720 that WILL fit on an AM3 board. (I'm thinking Thermalright Ulta/True Black or Noctua)

Cost = £50 tops for the heatsink preferably, don't mind paying extra for fans.

Thanks.

You mean this Sunbeam cooler? If so, it claims AM3 compatibility so I don't know why it wouldn't fit. I remember having to be fairly mean to the clip on mine in order to get it on to my AM2 board, they're a little on the stiff side!

I got mine on one side, and then didn't feel comfortable with the amount of force I would have to put on the other side to get it to fit.

Yeah, it takes some doing. I know the item description on OcUK claims easy fitting - I say that's a load of balls :)

I had the same problem with mine, you will just have to push it down 'till it fits, it'll be fine!

Hm, will give it another go tonight in that case, will just be a little more brutal.

I do however plan on replacing it for a better cooler as I can afford it at the moment, have decided to go with the True Black and a couple of Black Xigmatec fans.

Sunbeam website say it compatible with AM2 & AMD2+

AM3 and Phenom are NOT listed - if you brought it off Ocuk drop them a webnote as it clearly says it supports AM3 on the shop site (but it doesn't)

Refund or swap in order I think - distance selling act and all that...

Or am I missing something and AM2 and AM3 have the same bracket - if so follow the instruction and use a bit more force, but not TOO much :D

As far as I've read AM2 and AM3 are the same, the only differance being amount on pins on the processor. I think the problem was it just requires considerably more force than I thourght was reasonable.

Thanks for that Fenris (stores away another nuget of info)

Back plate with bolts and springs for the win.
Why massive heavy towers, costing around £50 are not installed the same way as waterblocks out of the box is a crime.

Easy instillation - yer right, like to see sunbeams CEO do it.

I have that Mobo and a sunbeam...

when you say about getting better cooler there really isnt anything better. you might get 1 degree cooler for another £50.00 but that means you would have spent £80-90 on cpu cooler???

It does fit it is snug, I had same thing as you when i changed my cooler but the easiest way to do it is to take the mobo out and then put it in. But it does defo fit on AM3 And the Msi

Well I can always sell the sunbeam, my recent Tax Rebate was...substantial, and it is my money after all.

Good to hear it does fit, makes me more comfortable using more force knowing it will actualy go on.

Just remember - it really does need quite a bit of pressure to get the bloody thing on. Stick some foam under the board and give it hell :)

What are you - man or mouse...??
If it fitted easily it wouldn't cool so well, so flex those muscles, show it who's boss, and treat it like you would your wife/partner/poodle/whatever.....

It seems I've been emasculated by a heatsink.

Should I kill myself now?

No, just by someone who also spent a while struggling to fit my Sunbeam, but was too afraid to admit in public that it was difficult, so kept quiet while stroking my false hairy chest..!
Must go - got to polish the wifes shoes before I cook her supper....

Ive heard they are a really good cooler and well worth the extra effort to fit ............... taking the board out and putting it on foam seems like a damn good idea :)

Well, just thourght I would update, finaly got it to fit with a bit of time looking at it and scowling under my breath.

Turns out you need to bend the mounting bracket and then it's just a case of growing an extra hand to then latch the clip onto the base plate. I just got my sister to do it.

Ease of fitting my arse.

Working now though, so will take my first shot at overclocking my 720 some time this week.

Your sister grew an extra hand just to help you fit it - what a cool sister !!!;)

Glad its sorted, and hope my emasculation of you wasn't taken personally..
