That's great news, it'll turn what is already a fantastic value provider into the best IMO.

I switched to Astraweb a month or so ago from Giganews and haven't regreted it one bit, just as fast but half the price. The fact that retention was 'only' 160 days didn't bother me due to the saving every month, this announcement of 270 days retention is just a bonus and is fantastic news

I signed up a while back on their $11 for life offer but still have my uber Giganews account until I'm happy Astra are "solid".

I have also jumped ship to AstraWeb, so far so good! I've been happily maxing out my 16Mb line.

I read that the retention upgrade is being done 1 day at a time. so it will be a couple of months until it's at the 270 mark.

Yeah, basically if what I read is true it's being done from the front. That is, all the posts made since the upgrade announcement will stick around for 270 days. So if you were to search for a file tonight, and try to download one from 200 days ago it won't be there. Obvious really, as they didn't have 200+ day retention before the announcement; they can't just make the old (dropped) posts reappear :)

So in practice it could take 110 days from the date of Astra's announcement for them to have 270 day retention. Still not too shabby, and at least they have FULL 270 day retention (ie including headers etc), unlike some ;)

Since finding out the VM had a binary news server I setup my Astraweb account as a fill only. I'm getting 85-90% from VM and the rest from Astraweb. As I'm on pay-as-you-download my $25 is gonna last me ages now!!
