Hiya,

I need a little advise.

My bill is £160 a month for 3 guys living in a flat.

There will always be one light on, 1 console and 3 laptops.

The washing machine gets used I'd say 7 times a week and the tumble dryer 3 times-ish. Obviously the usual, tv on from 16:00 till 00:00, Sky + on the same.

Does this seem a bit much? I live in a flat so think I might be paying for upstairs or maybe the hairdressers downstairs?

You know those plug in heaters? How much do they use?

Thanks for any help I'm bound to get.

plug-in heaters use up loads of electricity, how often do you have them on? We have a small fan heater that uses over 2kw when the heater part is turned on.

Massive amount, would expect the normal bill for 3 adults in a house would be around 30-35 a month tops, plug in heaters do use a lot but you would have to run 2 on full power solid to get anywhere near that bill and still you wouldnt be close.

Plug in heaters might be the problem: they should have a power rating on the side, i.e. 2 or 3kW?

Which is 2000 or 3000 watts - so per hour of useage, are using maybe 3 units of electricity. If you're paying around 20p per unit, that could be 60p per hour per heater.

Would that give you a large chunk of that £160, depending on how much you're using them and for how long per day?

Using that calculation, no where near enough. We only have one and that's not used that much. Certainly not in the last month or so.

Thats just stupidly high. Average anual usage is around 4000kWh (higher if you have electric heating though), so you have used about 1/4 of a normal persons yearly useage in a month.

Don't use your heating! Make sure your hot water is only being heated when you need it (could be on a timer running for longer than it needs too). Make sure you are turning everything off at the wall when you stop using it, dont leave Pcs and things on for longer than you need, blah blah blah all the normal energy saving measures.

Best thing you can do is take a reading now. Right it down and take another next week compare the amount used in that week. I had the same problem a while back with being over charged. The electric company will ask you to do the same if you call them. Thinking about it call them and give them a reading and explain why they should ask you to give them another reading next week. Once they would out how much your using they can adjust your bill accordingly. In my experience they always get it wrong until you correct them. Good Luck hope that’s been some help.
