I decided that as myself and my gf both drive 9 year old cars it was a bit silly not having breakdown cover. I had been on a family RAC policy which I never used and before that on a family AA policy which I used a few times :o.

I then had a big dilemma about wanting decent cover and not spanking £120+ a year and not even using it.

So... I ended up with just the basic RAC for myself only :p Theory being that Jane doesn't have to drive anywhere for work, any long distances would be done together or me on my own and if she was to be out on her own I could always drive to her and park my car round the corner as RAC covers the driver, not the car.

All for the sum of £9.99 if I end up getting my cash back

What do you fellow OCUKers use/have and what are your experiences?

I switch between the AA and RAC each year as you get great introductory offers for new members. The same with the Mrs. So recovery to garage or home from both is around £40 each.

I've currently got breakdown cover with my insurance company built into the policy (I'm with Admiral)

It was about £50 IIRC but that included homestart etc which isn't included in the basic RAC/AA/Green Flag policies

I haven't had to call on it yet thankfully, touch wood! :)

I'm thinking this is what I should have got. I can see me breaking down in the middle of nowhere and getting stung on a repair :o

Oh well, if it costs too much to repair I'll take my belongings out (inc. CD player) and tell them I'll stick the logbook in the post ;) :D

My dad bought a family policy which we've been with for a couple of years. In fact, he gave me a card to carry before I even drove or owned a car. On the card it says Roadside, Recovery and Home Start, not sure which level of package that is.

i used the RAC last year (came free with the driving lessons) and they were OK, but mis-diagnosed a leaking rocker cover gasket as HGF :( - could've fixed at the side of the road. They wanted £90 to renew

now I get breakdown with my insurance. it is sub contracted out to britania rescue i think, who are simply amazing :D had some good experiences with them.

I had rac cover, useless to be honest, both times took about 1hour and half and both times I got towed as they had no water with them.

That and my membership ran out 6th of dec and the cancelled it 5th and I broke down on the 6th and were not going to come and get me till I moaned for half an hour at the side of the road. :p

Do what I did and joined the AA

AA Option 300 (which gives me Roadside, Relay and Homestart) with AA Parts and Labour which means that if my car gets recovered the AA will pay the first £500 of repairs (£50xs). Total cost is just under £200 which is quite a lot for breakdown cover but I do tend to use it :(

OOPS too late. I can get basic AA for £15 so we're tempted to get AA cover for my GF so if we brake down we've got both bases covered. Call both, when one turns up phone the other back and say we got it started :o

i had rac for 14od years, the three times i used them they were poo so this year i switched to AA and theve been brilliant, ive used them once, they couldnt fix my car so i got a smart car for a day then they came to my work with a flat bed and swapped them back over, no fuss no hassle

We have a family plan thingy with the AA. It's the Relay/Roadside/HomeStart package.

We upgraded to the Relay after I needed a flatbed to take me 11 miles home - the limit for Roadside is 10 miles, Relay will take you anywhere in the country.

Have since used it once more, and it saved me a LOT of money, not needing to pay out £300+ to get a car flat bedded from Chester to Colchester.

full AA cover for 3 years thanks to my cars warranty..and when it runs out I will stick with the AA

AA cover free with my lloyds bank account :)

no home start though , i have to be at a roadside

could just push my car onto the street i guess :p

same here, and if theyre crap i have a mate who works for the RAC in my work area. ;)

Got Green Flag cover with my Barclays account :E

Recently got caught out because the account i had only had limited cover with Greenflag ( 10 mile radius of my address ) so I had to fork out some extra cash to get home :/

I have since upgraded my account ( an extra £3 a month or something ) to get full cover all around the country etc. No sure about homestart though.

When you break down, if the AA/RAC fix your car at the roadside do they charge you for parts or is that all part of the sub?

Been with the AA for 5 years now. Received my renewal this morning which stood at £91 for Option 200.
New members get this for £67.99 via the website so I rang them to cancel. I was told that I should have been given a discount as I haven't used the service since 2005 and it was promptly reduced to £63.

Service wise, I have had to use the AA around 3 times and they've been great each time.
