Hello all!

I've recently moved to the other side of the country to take up my studentdom in the great Bristonia. Obviously, a student budget is as a student budget does, but every so often I stumble upon a situation where knowing a few decent restaurants in the local would be invaluable - parents visiting, taking a maiden on a date, etc.

So, I wish to tap into the brainbox that is OcUK. Throw me your favourite restaurants in the area. My usual thing is somewhere that's not too expensive and not too cheap, preferably with the bohemian independant feel and often a little qwerky. Don't get me wrong, voucher-tastic chains are majestic for birthdays and suchlike, but when it's something a little special, I like to find something original.

Do your worst.

Grateful for all nosh-pointers, :)
Peter

Woah that's a comprehensive list!

Do you have any particular favourites?

Zero degrees is great, relaxed micro brewery. So not just a restaurant.

Also don't forget
Sergio's Restaurant Tel: 0117 929 1413| 1-3, Frogmore St, Bristol, Avon BS1 5NA

It's Bring your own by the ice rink. it's amazing.

There's also a nice pub on Cotham Hill which does proper wood fire pizza.

I've just edited my post - all of the ones I've ended with a * I've been to, the others I just know of/have been recommended (the head chef from Prosecco was on Gordon Ramasay's F Word recently for instance and it's a family run business, though apparently very hard to get a booking).

It depends what food and atmosphere you want really. Based on your 'qwerky' taste Mud Dock, The Albion, Sands, The Sausage Factory and Byzantium are all pretty cool. All independently run as far as I'm aware too. Byzantium in particular is *very* well decorated - should be some photos on their website I imagine - and Sands is underground in an old cellar.

One of my personal favourites is Zero Degrees. It's a microbrewery so they have good ales on tap and they do good pizzas/1kg pots of mussels for around the £10 mark.

The ones I haven't mentioned are a bit more 'classier' or normal.

I've also heard of this but never been - heard it's very good and it's always packed so it gets my vote too.

Yep, although I've only tried a few, any in particular? :)
Depends what you want. I rate HK Diner highly if you like a good Chinese or Malay meal - ALSO they have a funny little 'specials' menu on a separate blue card, tons of food listed with naff all description on it. "Spicy fish" turned out to be a large piece of snapper with AWESOME sweetish chilli sauce on it. NOM NOM NOM.

Hotel Du Vin is very nice and posh and they do occasional deals which is handy: http://www.hotelduvin.co.uk/2009/

I'm not going to start a list as I'll go on forever - there's so much in Brizzle - avoid the chains for the time being as they're the same everywhere... enjoy!
