Hi folks, my brother is looking to get a new 24" monitor for £200 or less. What should he be looking at?

Cheers.

As stated in another thread:

I have used plenty of Samsung monitors and have had no issues. Every manufacturer has some 'dud' models that seem to skimp on something quality-wise here and there - especially considering budget TN models. Samsung's new models are some of the better built at the moment. If you were to avoid every manufacturer where some people have had issues with particular models you'd be out of luck buying anything at all.

Well a quick google and even their later models people are getting break downs after a couple of years and I am not finding too many other manus suffering the same fate.

But point taken it would seem there was a massive batch of bad capacitors doing the rounds around 2006-2007 ?

I have recorded countless problems in 2009-10 when I have tried to recommend certain panels to institutions (including Iiyamas, Dells, LGs and others) and they have had problems with previous models that have put them off buying monitors from that manufacturer again. I think the capacitor issue is one that has been easy to pinpoint and seems to have affected a number of Samsung monitors and TVs circa 2006-07. I have a 2032BW manufactured August 2007 in Slovakia that has been heavily used and has run without hitch (so far). I also have some Samsungs from 2005 in my office that have been working no problem for 5 years so far.

Ah, in that case you will want to get a XBox 360 VGA cable.

I'm not sure what the maximum resolution for this is. VGA is capable of 1080p, but i'm not certain if the Xbox limits it.

May I ask what sound output device you will be using?

He's using the VGA cable at the moment but the monitor is only a 17", I think it's just plugged into some speakers.
