My turn - BMW is dead

At 11.30am this morning my BMW was pronounced dead... by a police officer. While the heart was still beating it was clear it wasnt going to do any more miles.

Driving along a new stretch of tarmac along a lane i have driven twice a day for the last 3 months, i gave myself some room to pass an oncoming car, rear wheel went off the road (it was a small verge which contained loose gravel and wet mud) slightly, back end started to swing out. At this point something in my mind triggered, it wasnt the right thing. Down like a sledgehammer went the right foot, ramming home the brake pedal. Oh dear, wrong thing to do!
I had some new rear brakes put on less than 100 miles ago, these didnt grip too well, but did a bit. Car went sideways across the road and into about a 5 foot ditch, at somewhere between 35mph and 40 mph. The nose dived into the opposite side of the ditch, causing the car to flip, bounce on its roof back onto the wheels. Airbags didnt deploy, A, B and C pillars still straight, slight bend in the roof where it bounced.

No pictures im afraid, my phone is borked, was shocked that i was able to make a call on it, let alone take any pictures. no idea how the works laptop is yet (was on the back seat, that could have hurt!).

Ambulance and police attended. Paramedics gave me the all clear, graze on forehead and a fair few mountains growing in my bald patches, raised blood vessels on my shoulder (from the seatbelt). No pain anywhere. Nice enough people, advised me on all my local places I can go should I feel any pains at all.

Police man was a nice bloke, while i was being checked over he was looking at the road, the insertion into the ditch, the broken fence and where the car landed. Took a statement and told me that he felt that I was accurate in my description and wasnt going to take any action at all, was confident that I wasnt speeding and there was no other factors to consider. Also told me to ring the police if I need any help with anything or advice on who to speak to, especially as the shock period mixes with grievance.

Ive had a cry (when i got home) but feel ok for the moment, i know the pain will come later and in the morning when my adrenaline levels drop. the shock will probably set in then as well.

The worst thing, all i have thought about today is a friend that was lost on saturday in a bike accident - http://www.trickery.net/vb/showthread.php?t=41260 .

Glad you got out it ok or minus a lappy in the head ;) get down to the local hospital to get some free pain killers pre whiplash as mine was hellish the day after :)

:(

Least you're ok(ish) :) Could have been a whole lot worse if you'd hit an oncoming car.

Comp or TPFT?

Btw - yes you did the wrong thing with the brakes. :p

rofl, yeah said to the copper when giving my statement, i knew it was the wrong thing to do. he said that unless you have been in that situation (not purposefully throwing the back end out) plenty of times before its instinct to slam it :/

woah,

lucky escape there especially with stuff loose int eh car.

sorry to hear about your friend.

glad your ok :)

oh, insurance is fully comp through Elephant. havent rang them just yet. letting myself (and the wife) calm down a bit (she wasnt involved, but you know what partners are like!).

Glad you are okay, sounds like you were lucky you didn't hit anything coming the other way or it might have been a different story :)

Sorry to hear about it man - thought this was gonna be a new car thread, not a crash thread! Are you going to claim off your insurance?

Sucks doesn't it. Blimey @ getting it on its roof though

Hope you are ok and glad you realised where you went wrong :)

Obviously this will now be a 16 page thread.. oh wait that only happens when its me and its more minor ;)

thanks.
damn right the insurance will be paying out. cant afford to just lose out on this. was looking for a new car as well!! typical.

I suppose the claim shouldnt hurt your premium too much as you're out of the "maximum risk" age bracket. What are you looking at for your next car?

I was quite amazed that it flipped, the angle it hit the ditch you would have thought that it would just stop right there, or just slide a few metres. from the point of hitting the ditch and landing on its wheels was around 10 metres i think, so not that far at all.

Quite funny, one of the owners of one of the 2 houses where it happened, came out as a car was blocking her drive ( a kind bloke stopped and let me sit in his car while waiting for the emergency services), she said that the place is like a spiders web, catches loads of people out (policeman said he hadnt heard of an accident on the whole road in atleast a year!), she said 'anyway, bad luck' and wondered back into her house!

random estate, going to have to see what the insurance will give me for the car first tho, its insured for its purchase price of £4k or so, but its value is around £2700. Just paid or new rear brakes and a £250 service as well!! damn.

The value you state when you insure the car is not the value of the car you'll get paid, infact I don't even know why they ask you. You'll get market value, after you've fought for it :(

Elephant were good with the Accord. They offered actually slightly above market value straight away. I honestly couldn't argue it as they were above the Glass book price and I couldn't find any autotrader adverts that were more than £150-£200 more than they paid out.

Glad to hear you're OK but what a life this is, why do bad things ALWAYS happen all at once?

I know where your head it probably at at the moment mate and wish you all the best.
