PhysX - Is it worth having a dedicated GPU for running it?

Right Guys and Girls, in my boredom, I decided to run some comparison video's comparing PhysX on the main GPU and PhysX on a dedicated GPU and the results were varied. I have so far tested Metro Last Light and Batman Arkham Origins but will be doing more (I am a fan of PhysX in games) and showing all the results but so far, MLL gave a small boost to frames but there was a nice bump in Batman: AO and there is a benefit from my testing in running a dedicated PhysX card. There is some caveats of course (when isn't there?) and these are:

Extra heat in the case
Extra power used
amount of games that use PhysX
Need an NVidia card in the main slot

So with those little caveats, it is down to you to decide if it is worth it. You don't need an expensive card like a 970 either and I am sure something like a GTX 460 would do just as good a job. Anyways, here is the results for you to see. My first video compared a 970 on its own as well, just to see how a GTX 970 stacked up against a Titan X.

Metro Last Light

Batman: Arkham Origins

I will be adding more when I have some free time and giving my thoughts on it.

Dedicated does show nice gains there in Barman.

I liked Physx, just a pity its not used as much as it could be - though it's understandable I guess when it only works on one vendor.

Never know, might be using Physx again soon :) Really need to make up mind on that.

Would it be possible to show this but with a much cheaper nvidia card doing physx ? Not everyone has a 970 around to just do physx ! lol, something much older like a 580 or 670 (max) would be interesting and in more peoples budgets, perhaps those cards + a 970 would be much more interesting.

Sadly I gave away my last spare GTX 560Ti to my mates boy and as i won the GTX 970 in a competition, I thought I would put it to use. Like I say though, a GTX 460 would do the same job.

Thought about doing this with my 690 that's been left in the box since I upgraded to a Titan X. Don't know if I'll benefit though so might just sell the card.

Linus did something similar, but it would have been nice to see what load and temps were on the 970. Unfortunately Linus didn't show that information also.

p.s does anyone know if that physX hack still works with AMD drivers so you can use a Radeon with an Nvidia card doing PhysX?

Not sure people would fall for that a second time.

I think nvidia could make a killing on it tbh.. I would buy. It's one bit of tech nvidia has that I would like. Even if the game are far between..

A PhysX card could open doors to new buyers who use AMD GPU's more profit for Nvidia, this also would open the door to more games willing to support it..

Physx needs to be open for the better of pc gaming, or a new player/tech

Nvidia should just release a PhysX card.. Am sure they would sell..

I wish they would if it worked with my 290 in the main slot. It might be the perfect way to get everyone over to Nvidia as well- get a taste of Physx etc then next time you upgrade-BAM-green team there you go.

Have a word will you Gregster

Incorrect iv seen comparisons done with older cards + titan x and just a titan x, and the lone titan x was just faster, perhaps the older cards were either unoptimized or the architecture etc, but the older cards seem to run slower than just the T-X now.....ill try to find the links.

Ahhh good to know. The last time I see someone test this, it was on a 460 doing the PhysX and probably a 680 (guessing) and it did well but that was way back, so maybe things have moved on somewhat now.
