I've had a look around and they definitely do exist, here.

But i can't find a product page or any for sale in the uk. Theres some for sale in the us here.

any idea where i might find them in the uk?

If you want to dim a fluroescent tube then yiou need a dimmable fluroescent electronic ballast and a dimmer switch both available from any good electrical trade places. Just done this at work a few weeks ago...normal 18w fluro tubes and dimmable electronic ballast... got the stuff from a national electronics trade only outlet ( can't give the name as they sell computer stuff as well)

I think he wants to dim an energy saving lamp, which I am told is unavailable in 240v configuration.
Yeah.
Not entirely sure how the 120v ones work, but i just want one of them in 240v really.

Can someone give me a brief overview of how they work and why making them dimmable is a bit tricky?

I think the ballast is a transformer to a higher voltage isn't it?

Edit: I'll go and read the article on them on wikipedia.

Dimming control can be added to the lamp with support from the driver electronics.
Thats what i'm after. Is it harder to do with 240v than 120 i wonder?

the additional electronics to dim a fluorescent tube are readily available. But, since the ballast is actually part of the single unit, dimming an energy-saving, compact fluorescent lamp is only possible where the lamp itself actually supports it.

I'm surprised these are readily available, because its the only thing left that incandescent bulbs can do and florescent bulbs can't.

This thread didn't appear in my subscriptions for some reason so i missed that.

I saw those bulbs but they aren't really dimmable, they have 3 light levels but it sounds like they are a real pain to operate.

Regarding the competitors rule, its only shops which sell pc components in the uk, i.e compete directly with ocuk. Anything else is fine. Common sense really.

I'll go and have another look for the Varilight.
