Sorry for asking all the questions.....i'm a noob and there is a lot of clued up people in these forums.

How far are we away for DirextX 10? I was thinking about upgrading my 6600GT to a 7800GT or maybe a 7900GT but if DirectX10 is round the corner will it be wasting money getting a new card if it won't run DX10?

Should I just get a 7600GT instead and wait till DX10?

Seeing as DX10 will be officiall released along with Windows Vista, and Windows Vista has been delayed until early 2007, you will have 10 months or so before DX10 even becomes a concern, let alone a good 6+ months after that before the majority of games start to use DX10 features (with exception to crysis, which is already in development in DX10). It will be even longer before games NEED DX10.

Don't put off an upgrade if you want/need one. There is always going to be "something" around the corner that appears worth waiting for, but if you always wait, you will never end up upgrading.

DX10 will be out when Vista is out so you are looking end of the year time.

Add then a few months before we actually see a game worth getting a DX10 GFX card for and you are looking at least a year.

Just get a 7600GT now and enjoy it through this year.

while that is good advice - it still doesn't hurt to check whats just around the corner. (Theoretically) It could have been that both ATI and Nvidia were ready to release dx10 cards in 2 weeks time, with Vista comming out at the same time.

Now we all know that isnt the case - but its just an example where you may be better off waiting :D

But as you have quite rightly pointed out - this (dx10 / vista) isn't going to happen for at least 8-10 months. So if anyone is looking to upgrade a graphics card just now - then it should really be a non-issue! :)

By the time that DX 10 games will be out and the norm. Both companies will have gone through a few generations of DX 10 cards already so if you were to wait for a dx 10 card by the time you would be actually using it in standard games it will already be outdated.

The nature of technology.

I have a simple philosophy which is enjoy the now and use your pc! :p

Have to agree. :)

It depends on how long you want to keep the card for. If you want to keep the card for a few years, then definately wait for DX10. Remember when 9700 pro came out there wasn't any games that fully supported DX9 for a few months. Then later on when dx9 came standard, all those people (myself included) started winging about their geforce 4s could only do dx8.1. Even today, the 9700 pro is a good card, perhaps a little faster than the 6600. Admittedly though, the 9700 pro is one of those astonishing cards and getting a card like that for dx10 would be amazing. Otherwise, if your not going to keep it that long, then buy a card just now.

I'm looking at buying something like an XTX or G71 in july and the upgrading to a fully comptabile dx10 card in december.
