Hi all I had always suffered from high temps with my E6300 and Ninja so decided to lap them both using a kit I had lying around.
In the end my IHS turned out to be convex and the Ninja concave...

Idle temps @3.15ghz used to be 50-60degrees, load was 75!
Since lapping it idles at 35 degrees and load is 52degrees max so well happy it was all worth it:D
Paste is AS5, i've never seen cure-in temp drops but here's hoping...

400-grit took me the longest and got used the most, probs took an hr to get rid of the nickel

Some 800-grit passes gave me this reflection of the chopping board

Hello croc; on 2000-2500 grit by now

Straight enough for me!

The ninja didn't require too much work but it wasn't flat...

Very good, tempted to do this to mine to see if I can improve on my water temps.

Currently idle at around 28 - 30 and load of 40 - 42, for the sake of a couple of quid for the paper I may do this when I come to sort my kink in the loop out.

Good result.

Thanks guys, GinG it wasn't as 'hard' as I thought really, just take your time and apply even pressure through the middle of the CPU I reckon...
Just maybe get a few more sheets of 400 from an autoshop

As for HSF's you gotta make sure it doesn't jump around...

I got a good 10-15C reduction on mine when I did it - tho IMO I didn't get anything like as good finish as you got :D even the watercooling setup saw some benefit tho not as much as air - 2-3C lower idle and 5C lower load.

Nice job, i lapped both my cpu and TRUE black a while back and it also gave me a nice drop in temps, my first attempt at 3.8ghz resulted in temps of 80-80-71-71, after lapping and 2 better fans on the cooler i was getting 68-68-62-62.

I'm gonna have to this with my E2160 and Freezer 7 Pro. Maybe also worth getting a TRUE when I do it :D

Do you guys think that a reasonable proportion of the cooling effect comes form being extra careful with the thermal paste afterwards? :p

Sayso only if you engineered parts to fit like a jigsaw, otherwise there will be poor contact all over the shop regardless
