What are peoples essential programs?

First things I always install are NOD32, Office 2003, Acrobat 7, Alcohol 120%, CloneDVD2, Newsleecher, QuickPAR, Thunderbird and Opera.

Windows is never on long enough to get defragmented - I tend to reinstall every couple of months!
 
Winzip, norton internet security, winRAR, Office, Acrobat, 3dmark, powere dvd, isobuster, karaoke builder, karaoke song list creator, cpu-z, super-pi, roxio 9, cdrwin, keyrite ( karaoke key changer ), mp3+g tools, whatever games i happen to be playing
 
Drivers, Maya, Photoshop, After Effects, Combustion, FireFox, Avast, Spy Bot, VLC, Ad Aware, MS Office, iTunes, TuneUP, UTorrent, Divx.

Tune XP
7zip or WinRAR(depending on my mood)
Mcafee V8 (because I got it free)
Firefox, thunderbird
Ulead Gif Animator
MS Office 2003
MSN Messenger (and the advert removing tweaks)

Although soon I might stop installing Photoshop and use Paint.net instead, it's fantastic: http://www.getpaint.net/index.html and completely free
 
i'd ditch pshop if i could find a decent batch resizer

nothing comes close in the quality that this achieves.. (that i've tried anyway)

picassa would be an awesome tool if it had good resizing capabilities, it makes slight distortions when resizing massive images

I usually always install: Symantec AV Corp, WinRAR, Office 2003, Nero 6, FlashFXP, uTorrent, Visual Studio - thats pretty much it. But I have not installed for a while as I have an image that I load up now, takes 8 mins. :) Anything else I need goes on afterwards.

Same, saves an awful lot of messing about. I can even let my mates kids play on the PC without worrying about them messing it up :p
 
Having my drive imaged had save me loads and loads of time, if you are doing a fresh install you should really make it sweet and then image it with Acronis or similar. You can get a free copy of Acronis too.

I reinstall everytime a new Vista version gets released. I consider all the things on this list my essential apps, but I install in this order, drivers get done first. Then things which I use constantly and consider very essential, I also change Windows settings during this time. Productivity apps get installed next, though they are not that important, finally Other programs get install last :)
