whats best from your experiences as there are so many! i currently use sygate an old version 5.5 i think? its been bought out by symantec right?
it used to have a wierd issue with ftp'in files across... i'd have to disconnect my firewall to get across... hoping this is solved though as now using a router/switch/modem to manage network and isp:)
anyways as it looks like i will be doing a reformat soon on either new hardware upgrade to my system or a replacement socketA i am thinking of investing in a new firewall if one can be proved better and more compatable than my current sygate 5.5?
cheers for all suggestions and insights they are greatly apprieciated;)

You can buy a router for the same price you pay for the firewall software, hardware firewall is much better imo.

Norton isnt that good ;)

I would go for NOD32 and windows / Router Firewall ;)

Using nod32 myself, best investment i've made in windows protection. Also sat behind a router.... :D

do you need a software firewall if you've got a router? i know i dont. Unless you want control over things that dial out, its really not needed.

incedently, netlimiter makes a handy outbound firewall. with the added bonus of being able to limit the bandwidth of those outbound programs.

edit: and thats if sp2 firewall isnt good enough.

TBH, norton USED to be good. Now it just is a system hog. Nod32 is good, along with Kasperspy.

I have heard this from many people, to be honest, I dont think it is at all, not just saying it because I have it lol but honestly I would recommend it to anyone :D

Used Norton for years, then switched to McAfee for a few years.

Most people i know have 1 of the above, but imo, since i've seen them all in effect is... Norton is a real system drainer, and still misses things others pick up ocassionally. McAfee is better but it still hogged a noticable when say gaming, even disabled it was noticable.

Nod32, keep it on 24/7, run games, anything, and i never notice it. And its also cheaper.

In regard to a firewall, a router is a much better option. Works out the same or cheaper then paying for the software.

Plus you have the option to share the connection with others PC's, always handy.

Hate Norton and Mcafee.
Using BitDefender at the mo - its alright but a bit of a hog.
Used to use Nod32.
TBH I went several months with the xp firewall and no AV without problems so :/

Spend some cash and get Norton, works a treat for me :)

definatly don't do that..

just use the xpsp2 firewall, its perfect

a hardware router for internet is all you really need tbh, i keep my firewall on because i forward a few ports to my pc for remote use

you don't need antivirus or spyware protection either if you're only going to visit non-stupid websites, i've been doing this for months now

-a few weeks ago someone said "run ewido, i bet you'll find loads of crap"
ran it today, the only things it 'found' were some exe's that i'd made myself and were not set to run, and they were just renaming bat's converted to exe's

hardware router + sp2 firewall + common sense = all you need, and this way, your pc will be hella fast without continuous file scanning going on

I thought this thread is about firewall, whats all the talk about NOD32, Kerspersky, Macfee, bitdefender?

Kerio v2.15 is a good firewall, small, neat, does what a firewall needs to do.

Indeed, if people don't know the difference between an antivirus and a firewall then they shouldn't post advice! ;) :D

Kerio 2.15 is an excellent choice and very light on the system, you won't have to search around on the interweb for it either as I have done that for you:

http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/downloads321/keriopf215.zip

BlackICE PC Protection is very good and also offers IDS (intrusion detection) to guard against trojans and worms etc.. Ashampoo, Kerio 4, Kasperky Antihacker and Comodo, Netveda, Private Firewall, Jetico, Softperfect, Tiny, Zone Alarm.....blah, blah...there are loads. However, if you are running XP SP2, just use the inbuilt Windows firewall as it has hardly any system load at all, won't slow surfing and requires no configuration. The only disadvantage is there is no outbound filtering but if you have antivirus and antispyware there shouldn't be anything on your system that you don't want to 'phone home' anyway.
