the answer is to get your mechanic to do the job.
the plug next to the diesel pump on Pug diesels requires a special tool to get it out.

Thought so. Just that someone wants to buy the car and wondered if I could do them myself.

Cheers :)

if you're handy with welding gear you can cut and shut an old spanner to do the job...unless you actually have the correct tool of course.

What?

I changed the glow plugs on my pug which took a whole 2 minutes. All i needed was a spanner...

Well I guess a spanner would be a "special tool" if you didn't have a set, a ratchet spanner makes the job easier but is not essential.

Be VERY careful when undoing the first plug that if you need a lot of force to move it initially you don't want it to turn suddenly and the spanner whack the coolant inlet to the head because they go very brittle with age and will break. I did this on a Xantia and if you think changing a glow plug in that position is difficult you really don't want to be messing changing the coolant inlet.

What's it like working for Haynes these days anyway? :p

Im presuming its the same XU(T)D lump as my Xantia TD has?

If so then the 4th glowplug behind the pump is a mare... Between me and my dad (who has hands far smaller than mine but still too big...) we managed to change it without a specific tool in around an hour and a half (no really.)

To get to it you will definately need to remove as much solid / thick piping as you can and then the trick was to a) have a strong extendable magnet and b) find a long spanner the right size for the job...

Once we had partial access to it (you can access under the pump on the right hand side and directly down through a small gap on the left once piping is removed) it was a case of painstakingly undoing the old nut with tiny turns of the spanner at a near 90 degree angle (spose in retrospect bending the end of the spanner by 90 o would have been sensible) then collecting the nut and washer with the magnet....

then moving the plug out using the two gaps (this is painful btw) and placing the new one in the same way.. then using the magnet to replace the washer and CAREFULLY balancing the nut.

We finally got a few turns by hand by going in and under the gap on the right whilst watching through the space on the left.. and finally repeat the slow agonising process of tightening it up about an eighth of a turn at a time!!

Hey at least it started after :p

My fourth one also took me just over a hour to do, with these same small movements you mention :) I only had one cut finger and a single swearing fit - it went quite well really ;)

Wuss, you've got spares on the other hand :p
stuff that.
i don't even fix my own car in the winter now.
i've had too many nights standing out in freezing weather watching the oil and dripping blood mix on my engine components to last me a lifetime.
grease monkeys are so cheap now i'd rather pay someone to do the work.
it's just not worth my time.

I took the first bit of advice. Local mechanic changedthem today, for £10 and half an hour :) Result :D
