Hi

Was cleaning up the inside of my pc yesterday, i regularly periodlcally air dust the fans and clean out any fluff built inside in components etc.

Anyway i have done this many times without issue however yesterday i may have experienced my first component blow out. Stupidly i had pulled out the power cord from the psu while only turning it off at the psu and not at the wall.

There was no explosion but there was a small jolt (to me) and then a very slighy burning smell. thinking nothing of it at the time i continued, taking the leads out at the time and then carrying on the maintenance. It wasn't until i had put everything back together, leads etc. That my pc would not power on.

There was a distinct high pitch noise like a high frequency (possibly caused by the em field perhaps?? ) but nothing turning or moving (fans). The motherboard had no power of lights and none of the component had any juice. The psu itself was not moving as the base fan or the back fan within the psu was not even turning, only this high pitch noise.

I take it my psu has gone or the fuse or something within has blown? Worst thing is i have not got my receipt as my psu has a 3 year warranty. Just going to have to fork out another psu :(

Anyone comfirm this, would be much appreicated. Hope none of my other components are damaged ie mboard, gfx or worse :(

Thanks

Kyo

P.s would there been a chance that the psu had blown because i hooked too much stuff to it? I only got a single 1900xt , 3HD (2 Sata and 1 IDE) and a dvd burner. Would have thought a a 580W could handle that with ease. Just looking to see what make i should go for ? Hiper (i thought) is decent so i may go for the same thing again as i put it down to me being unlucky or careless? Any other psu suggestions would be greatful also.

Sounds much like your PSU has gone to be honest :( This is another report of a Hiper going boom...only way to check would be to try another PSU else, RMA that thing!

I had pretty much the same conclusion however is there a high case of Hiper PSU going like that ? what other psu could i go for as it a oppertunity for me to get a decent one. Preferablly modular, and i got around £60 -£100 as budget?

Cheers

Mate I think that's the 13/14th one that has gone boom in a week! If it was my money I would definitely get a Corsair 520W They are brilliant build quality, have a 5 year warranty, and are modular :) Lots of people have got one and they say its silent and definitely worth the money

yeah i just did a search on the forums and can see that there been a number of cases with that particular psu. Going to swtich i think :D

Before coming into the forums this morning i had already ordered another replacement Hiper PSU. I quickly cancelled the order upon reading the forums and now just looking for a replacement.

Debating to go with either Enermax Liberty 620W or the Corsair 620w.

Both products look pretty decent Enermax is a brand name for psu however corsair from what most have said is decent too with 5 years warranty.

hmm decisions decisions.

Its might be pointless to try. But you might have just blown the fuse in the actual power cable.

Like i said tho probably not as the psu is making a noise, but hey.

Hope the new psu works out better for you :)

Although unplugging the psu cable from the psu while its still on at the wall doesent normally affect the psu, just depends i guess.

yes i thought the cable could be the issue but i already tried a different cable and it doing the same thing so no joy. I have done this quite a few times in the past although bad practise it not done any harm until now.

So i guess it taught me a lesson. Oh well :o

Thanks LoM - think i am most likely going for that. Now the hard parts done. Time to go shopping :D

Hopefully none of my other components are damageed as i won't be able to tell until i hook it all back up with the new psu

Well thank God it was only the psu. Got a new one, installed it and rehooked everything back up.

Everything was fine, botted up 1st time without any problems.
