Uh-oh, think my P5B deluxe has died...

I was tweaking the OC settings a bit when it wouldn't POST. I wasn't too worried, has happened before, so went ahead and rebooted a few times to see if the CPR thing that the P5B has would kick in. It didn't, but again that's happened before. So I opened things up and tried to clear it by the jumper. Went through the following a number of times:

1 Remove battery
2 Put CLRTC jumper to clear position
3 Leave for a while (I've varied this, everything from 10 seconds to overnight, and quite a few in between)
4 Put jumper back
5 put battery back in
6 boot up

This hasn't worked at all, so after a bit of googling did a bit of a search and found a few more suggestions that I've tried:

* Boot with only 1 stick of RAM. I've tried this with each of my sticks in different positions on the mobo. Tried about 6 different positions, varying which stick I'm using and nothing.

As a last resort there is a suggestion to remove the CPU completely and turn on for a while with no CPU. Apparently this is supposed to clear all settings on the mobo. This didn't work either. The weird thing is that I get no warning beeps of any kind from the mobo when I turn it on with no CPU. would have thought I should?? I do get warning beeps if I try turn on without any RAM in there though...

Anybody got any more ideas??

I mate

happen to me the same , in the days i try to overclock it to the maximum
(a few months ago)when I reach 530/535 fsb with it

only way the board boot again,is to change the Ballistyx ram for a generic DDR, who works by default at 1.8V
( I have a spare stick of generic 512MB for that occasions):)

netby: That sounds pretty good, can get a generic stick pretty cheap. But how many times has that worked for you and were all the symptoms the same as mine? (I'm a little hesitent of going and buying a stick of RAM if it's not going to work in my particular case... ;) I know you can't guarantee it'll work in my case, but just wanted to check if all the symptoms were the same - did you try all the same things to fix it before coming to this solution? )

Also, if anybody with a P5B deluxe could tell me if it has a "No CPU" warning beep? I'd have thought it should, but can't find any documentation on P5B warnings... the fact mine doesn't worries me.

well prety simple:

I do a lot of overclocking with it,with lot´s of combinations of parameters

when the overclock fail, let´s say with the fsb at 500 or less, the board does not boot sometimes ,but all it needs is to switch the power off for a few seconds, and then in next boot the bios are reset to defaults and in the screen appears the fail boot warning, press F1 to reset bios bla-bla -bla....
and then you could enter the bios and set the parameters again ant save exit and then the sistem is up running again fine

when I try the overclock to high (let´s say at 530/540/550 fsb) the sistem fails to boot, ( it have append two or tree times)but after the power off trick the board is still like dead

so I remove the battery for a few minutes, nothingh, remove the ram and insert it again ,nothingh, remove the vga card, nothingh ( only thingh i never done is to remove the cpu)

I was thinkhingh I have a dead mobo, i was ready to remove it from the case, and then by chance ,in one last atttempt I try a stick of that generic ram and voillá, the sistem boots fine( of course in the screen appears the warning of the fail boot blalblabla- then I enter the bios ,and set the correct fsb for cpu ,and the correct voltage for the Ballistyx ram ( 2.2V)- then i power off, the insert the ballistyx again and the boot the sistem ,with everithingh working fine again)

this happend tree times ,when the power off trick does not work, that routine of the generic ram , is always my "salvation" and have worked exactly in the same way

by the way, in that times of overclocking " madness", I have two kits of ballistyx PC2 5300 dead( in a period of 4 months) and I have used it at 2.25V

after that period ( last dead kit was at 4/5 months ago) I have been using the pc at factory defaults , with the ram at 333mhz ,timmings at 12-3-3-3 at 1.9V , and no one single problem, no one single boot fail etc until now:)

Only 3 years warranty from ASUS Iberica ( in Spain):)
but the support is bad, normally two months for a board to return...

ok try it mate, by all the "abuse" I have done to my board, I have the strong impression that the Asus bios is a "hard to die" one:D

Cheers. I'll look into it.

I bought a Gigabyte DS3 so I'm not really in any hurry - I'll just sell the RMA'd P5B if they ever replace it.

netby: Nice one! Seems to have done the trick. Unfortunately I had to restore all default settings, so guess I'll need to reclock everything. And re-orthos it all since I reseated the CPU while trying to fix it. *grumble* Ah well, still happy it's back up and running, so cheers!

cheers mate:)
nice to see it work for you

quote:
"Unfortunately I had to restore all default settings"

exactly, because when you take the battery off,the board have reseted itself to factory settings, Vcore included( wich means 1.8V from factory) and sometimes the Crucial Ballistyx refuses to work at 1.8V specially after they suffer a high overclock (they are tunned to work at 2.2V)

that´s why with a generic cheap ram- who normally works at 1.8V- the sistems cames alive again

off course,as all the bios settings are reverted to factory settings( because of the battery take off)you need to adjust everything again - you could put everything in default mode( without overclock) or just adjust the overclock for the cpu, or fsb, ram , voltages, etc

aniway this board has lots of tweakings, in order to have it overclocked and stable it needs a bit of
patiente:)

by the way, this guide have helped me a LOT
