So after 2.5 years of owning a 2002 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec i've decided to get a new car. The criteria was something reasonably quick yet practical at the same time (i'm a keen mountain biker so needed something I could chuck a rack on). This left me with a short list of the following cars:

Mondeo ST220
E46 BMW 330i/d
Audi A4 3.0 Quattro
Skoda Octavia vRS

Price wise I decided that it was possibly not a great idea to spend the entirety of my original budget (around £10k) and that saving a little would make sense. This left me discounting the BMW and Audi options, leaving the ST220 and vRS. A test drive of an admittedly ropey prefacelift ST220 estate made me feel that although a very capable car, it wasn't really what I was after. So I went for the vRS:

Car is a 2003 model with 28k on the clock in excellent condition. Full, comprehensive history and a year MOT. cost me £5.5k (a little expensive IMO but it was up for £6k and I got £2k for a very ropey 2002 focus in px) so not a bad deal really...

Insurance is £800 FC (23, 2 years NCB, 3 years licence in an F rated postcode....got to love living in cardiff :/).

Plans for it so far are a remap to 210-220 bhp and maybe some uprated discs/pads to go with it. Also some new number plates as the current ones are delaminating slightly and looking tatty.

Pretty happy with it so far, done around 300 miles since picking it up yesterday and not noticed any issues so far. Just hope it's a bit more reliable than my focus was!

I likes! Think it's a nice bit of estate kit.

Oh, and don't complain. I just got quote £2,500 third party for a 1.8 escort. I'm 24. (Admittedly I have no no claims bonus, 3 points and 2 years experience :))

Ant

Looking good!

They are very reliable motors, the only things that are known to go are maf sensors (£80) and coil packs (£20 each). So nothing major.

Stage 1 remap does make a nice difference, takes boost up from the stock 9psi up to about 16psi (with the APR remap anyhow).

Worth getting a cable and vag-com, has come in very handy for me. It can read codes and test parts of the engine, can save a lot of garage time.

Black Magic looks GREAT when polish/waxed up as well :D

Very nice! Looks really nice and tidy :) Really miss my Furby vRS, definitely going back to VW/Audi/Skoda for my next car ;) How are these for fuel?

Enjoy :)

Getting around 30 to the gallon average, which has been driving it pretty hard and seeing as low as 5 to the gallon on the trip computer at times. Not too bad really :)

As an owner of an Octy vRS (07, non estate) in Black Magic I've decided that the only way to keep it looking "tip top" is to stop every 100m and wash it :)
The black attracts dirt like no other colour I've owned.

Been driving my vRS since August last year and it still makes me smile.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Wow thats insane, farnham aint that bad. 1 year ncb 1 year experience 650 on mine.

Looking good, dont see many estate VRS's. Still cant get over the fact they use white carpets.

The black is nightmare for dirt. I've temporarily given up till I find somewhere to clean it for me down here.

Good choice, what!

Not really up on what these are worth but it strikes me as a heck of a lot of money for a 6 year old Octavia?

He hasn't said what he paid mate just that he Didn't spend his original 10k.

Good motors, A mate got one from brand new for his Taxi firm & chucked 100k up it in no time with No issues at all, Rock solid motoring but then it is a Passat after all.
Don't like those seats much but apart from that I think it's a sensible choice.
