Crossfire p35,p45,x38.x48 pci-e 1 and 2 results

This has been posted on the motherboard forum but more interesting to the graphics forum so I will re post.

Short summary.

xfire on x48 is 17% quicker than a p35 (no surprise but thought it might be more?) on vantage.

p45 36% faster than p35 and a x48/x38 6% faster than a p45 on crysis.

So not much of a hit to run 4xxx in xfire on a p45, big hit on a p35 and less than 1% between a x38 and a x48
 
And x48 is consistently faster the x38. Same chipset, seems odd.

Previously we had found the performance of the Intel X38 chipset to be quite poor, which was surprising as the X48 really only brings 1600MHz FSB support to the table. However after spending hours upon hours testing with the ASUS Maximus Extreme, we were unable to beat the P45 performance with this X38 board. Therefore we ordered the Gigabyte X38T-DQ6 to re-test the X38 chipset, and as it turns out the results that we were receiving on the Maximus Extreme were much lower, as the X38T-DQ6 was able to match our X48 board.
 
Hmm, do not know what to do. I am sat waiting for my car to get serviced on EDGE/Laptop and I am so tempted to get 2 x 4850 instead of a X2 at the local pc wares....what to do....!

Yeah, it would appear that some x38 boards have issues and that not all are equal.

Unless they just got a bad one?

Would have helped if they got another Asus as well to see if it was a one off board. I was almost tempted to buy an asus maximus this week but that has put me off buying one now since the only purpose was to enable me to get a 2nd 4870.
 
Interestingly for me it shows for people who game at 1680x1050 that a P45 is more than adequate to Crossfire with, the x8-x8 PCI-E 2.0 slots are having little effect on the setup when compared to the x16-x16 x45 chipset at that resolution. If this review can be confirmed in time elsewhere then a P45 and 2x4850 make just about the best bang for buck killer gaming rig available at the mo.

For the difference in performance between the P45 and X48 its a no brainer. P45 all the way. More overclocking headroom and cooler running.

So far we have been unable to work out why the Maximus Extreme is delivering such poor Crossfire performance and had initially suspected it to be a Catalyst driver issue, though we are now doubtful that the drivers are to blame. For those that had already read the article previously we do apologize. The Gigabyte X38T-DQ6 has been thoroughly tested over the past two days and we are now certain that we have true X38 Crossfire performance with the Radeon HD 4850 graphics cards.

X48>X38>P45>P35 for crossfire.
 
Would love to see these done at 1920 x 1200 or higher with lots of AA. It's tempting me muchly to drop the P5K and 8800GT for a crossfire setup.. Damn that new screen!

At high /extreme res it still depends on x8 or x16 PCIE lines though doesnt it - which arent definitely on all boards of the same chipset, is that correct?

(ie one X48 board - Im guessing being the best - might have 2* x8 PCIE, and another with X48 may have 2*x16, in general still better going for an x38 as you arent missing out on much in comparison to the price?)
 
X48 2* x16 x16
X38 2* x16 x16
P45 2* x8 x8
P35 1* X16x4 (some special mobos have 8x 8x )

so in theory all X38's and X48s should perform the same. I cant think off the top of my head of any other exceptions to these rules. You can in some cases force mobos to do less for sample P45 @ 16x 4x.
