Yes, I know I make lots of threads about my next car but i'm one of those people who takes ages to do anything and after a few weeks get's filled with indecisiveness so I have to post another thread. At least I’ve added some pics and videos!!

It's down to two cars. The CTR or the RX8. Both are in my price range (13k-15k). Looking at buying after the summer time.

Civic Type-R

For my budget I’d be looking at a 2005 Civic.

Insurance Group 17.

Pros:

Looks Nice Enough
VTEC!
Fit a nice full size screen
Honda Reliability

Cons:

Steering / Handling
Very common
New model out soon - confirmed

Mazda Rx-8 231

Probably looking at a late 2004 for my money.

Insurance Group 16

Pros:

Very cool doors
‘Rareish’
Quieter, smoother ride
Also quite reliable
Digital Speedometer
Rev to 12/13k!!!
Good standard options (Climate Control, often leather, etc)
Same time round the top gear track as the BMW M3

Cons:

20mpg (Don’t care really, I have a fuel card!)
Lack of Torque?
Stereo built into dash. Big no-no :( < audiophile

So what do you think? I know there’s osme owners and ex-owners of both.

Come the end of summer I’d probably want something else :p

RX8

Dont buy a new CTR when a new model is round the corner, it will depreciate faster. The Mazda has lost a fair size of its depreciation already. It is also a better car to drive imo (only had about 30 mins in it but preferred it to the CTR). Sharper handling with more response, smooth engine that revs to 9k, and it looks gorgeous. Fuel consumption will be a pain in the proverbial though!

9k? I thought it was 12/13k, must be getting confused with some thing else!

I have a fuel card, so consumptions doesn't bother me.

Question. Did it feel 'fast'?

RX8 I'd go for out of those two. But neither if I had the choice :)

Not really a fan of rev'y rev'y engines :)

A DC5 Integra addresses a lot of the CTR cons (but adds grp 20 insurance of course ;)

It'd also be hard to pay £13-15k for a CTR when by the end of the summer you'll be able to get an immaculate one for <£10k. If I had to spend £15k I'd spend it on the RX-8 in preference since you get a bit more car for the money. Or I'd get an S2000 if I didn't need the back seats :p

RX8 in my opinion...

if you give one a go, let me know what you think of the gear change, I really couldnt get use to it !

gear change on the CTR is absolutely sublime tho... !

EDIT

just read the comment about lack of torque....

I REALLY dont get this, and this is me coming from being a diesel driver, all the revvy engine cars ive driven have been absolutely fine at low revs, you just need to know that to go very fast, you need to work the engine... shock horror, no different to any other really ! just a different technique...

The performance on both of them is almost identical. Both have the same bhp per ton figures, both will do 0-60 in around 7 seconds and both will see past 140mph. I wouls say the CTR is faster in a straight line and has more grunt, but the RX8 is so much more refined. Its a much better driving experience.....and look at it!! Its so much prettier inside and out! Dont forget that it cost about £23k brand new (I think). Plus, now that you mentioned you have a fuel card, it would be a crime not to go for the Mazda.

EDIT: The mazda has more torque than the CTR too I think, but it is fairly weak at lower revs.

I do love my CTR, but if I could actually afford to run an RX8 I'd probably have one.

As for depreciation on the CTR, I doubt that's going to happen, well it would go against the Honda trend anyway....least that's what I tell myself.

Had considered it, lovely looking cars.....but they're all imports and I hear there is no sound deadening between the cabin and engine so it's a very noisy ride....

Yes they are, although Honda are happy to service them so the only extra cost really is the insurance.

It was on the old DC2 integra, but I believe that the DC5 is rather more refined and I don't think they took quite so much of the soundproofing out :p Merlin will probably be along shortly to confirm/deny ;)

Why would it depreciate £3-5k in the next 4 months?

The new CTR isn't gonna be out until next year I believe and even so, nobody even knows what it's gonna be like to drive, it might be rubbish (just look at how VW ruined the Golf GTI).

You misunderstand me, you will be able to get a decent facelift, it may be a year older but it's going to make little difference apart from the reg. ie if you're going to go nearly new you may as well go a bit older for the ££ saving.

I'd put money on it being even more mainstream and to the petrolhead 'not quite as good' :)

The RX-8 imho.

Lovely looking car, and a bit of a bargain really.

I agree with Gareth though, the gearchange is a little odd. My mum uses her RX8 daily and says it's lovely in free flowing traffic but she's not too keen on it in stop start/queueing traffic.

the interior on the CTR is totally shocking. The quality is something id expect to find on a Lada. Plus the new model is round the corner. If i had to chose between the 2, id probably get the RX8.

both are pretty crap imo, I drove the rx8 and it was dull to the extreme, the interior is lush, but the engine is uninvolving and utterly dire on mpg, the civic is at least the better of the two but you have to wring the engine to get any power out of it, look at something like a cupra or s3, they are sensible cars with an awesome delivery of power and tunability :)
