Does anyone here smoke shisha?

Here is some information (stolen from www.shisha.co.uk)

Shisha is a Middle-Eastern smoking tradition that began hundreds of years before the invasion of the big American cigarette companies and is one of the most common and interesting sites of the Arab World. There are numerous cafes where one can lie on long cushions and spend the time talking to your friends and enjoying this Arab delight. Tobacco is soaked in fruit shavings such as strawberry, apples or grapes. This mixture is then smoked through a large water pipe (called a Shisha). Men and women of the upper classes in the Arab world have been entertaining guests with Shisha pipes for centuries. Moreover, there are hoards of Shisha purists who truly cherish this tradition no less than a Japanese tea Master or Matron.

With the invention of the hookah or "shisha" over 500 years ago, the Turks refined smoking to an artful and elegant ceremonial experience to be shared in the company of friends.

The hookah uses a small charcoal tablet to gently heat a special, flavor-infused tobacco blend. The tobacco never burns, but is filtered as it is drawn through the water-filled, hand-blown glass base and inhaled through ornate, embroidered hoses. The vapor is incredibly smooth, sweet and aromatic.

Shisha is tobacco mixed with molasses and fruit flavors and is smoked in a hookah. Shisha tobacco is not your typical tobacco. It's nothing like the tobacco you find in cigars, cigarettes, or dip. No, smoking true nargile shisha is an entirely different sensation. Shisha Tobacco is the Best as it's been well documented in the media, the tobacco in cigarettes is anything but pure. Large amounts of nicotine and other additives make it extremely harmful. Some cigarettes claim to be additive free, but plain tobacco isn't terribly pleasant to smoke. Smoked for flavor and not for any kind of effect, it proves a relaxing and peaceful pursuit. Since shisha is tobacco, smoking it involves some of the same ill effects as other types of smoking. It is very light and flavorful with a wonderful fruity aroma. The most popular flavor is apple, others include strawberry, pineapple, apricot, grape, rose, mint, and even cappuccino! (There is even an exclusive cola flavor).
In the Middle East, from Turkey to India, there are shisha cafes where people gather to smoke and drink coffee or tea. Smoking shisha can last two hours or more and is a very peaceful, social occassion generally filled with good conversation with friends. A shisha smoking session can last from thirty minutes up to and hour

I am currently enjoying some cola flavor Nakhla Shisha. Got to say it is gorgeous.

Any resident enthusiasts? Or has anyone here ever tried it?

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Chris :)

You should give it a go. It's not expensive and it is very relaxing. The flavours are amazing.

Don't smoke personally, but i've seen a few people enjoying them in a cafe. Smelt like bananas i did wonder what i was, cheers! :D

It's a very social activity, and is usually enjoyed with friends. I've yet to try a banana flavour, but it is on the list. Currently tried Strawberry, Apple and cola. Next on the list is some mint and some chocolate - so I can smoke them individually and also mix them for some choco mint :D. It is also, in no way at all, as harmful as a cigarette. As the smoke is filtered through the water. It has 0.0 tar and 0.05(!) nicotine.

I've got one, picked it up in Egypt for about £8 and comparable ones over here sell for about £50.

I've got some apple and some strawberry for it, unfortunately my flat isn't the best place to take it, so I save it for sitting out in the summer. Personally, I only go for fruit flavours as I know what I'm getting, I wouldn't touch cola and I think chocolate is pushing it a bit - chocolate isn't the kind of thing that you get juice from, so how can you get a semi-vapour?!?

I love the shisha, you get a slight nicotine hit off it, but it's just pure relaxation. I miss that about Egypt, just chilling in a bar with a shisha on a beach at any time of day...

I tried it down at my local shisha place, and I wasnt that pleased with it :( the taste was like you were spraying toilet air freshner directly into your nose and mouth

I've tried shisha with a few of my mates at uni. Someone had fruit flavoured shisha and it tasted like starburst to me. :D I wouldn't go out my way to buy it or anything, but it's quite a cool thing to do after a heavy night out or something. :)

Yeah, there's recipe's which are meant to be good for hangovers. I don't know how they manage to come up with that idea, but if it works im more than up for it.

Also, on the other hand, people are using things other than water in the vase, things such as vodka. I know that it's physically impossible to get drunk off it, but it's meant to be 'mind-altering'. Don't know if i'd risk a bottle of voddy to try it though.

Used it in this morroccon restaurant here in Edinburgh. Friends were like go on man you got the strongest lungs, get it started :p . I smoked the hell outta that thing lol. Nice fruity flavours.

i have one, as does a mate of mine (well, he has 4)

they are quite nifty, i bought mine at Be'er Sheba market in Israel a couple of years back.

don't use it so often because i can't find any of the damn charcoal briquettes around here...

Smoked this with my parents in Egypt. The Cairo Hilton had them in the foyer.

Tasted rather nice :)

You should try absynth in a water-bong :P.

But yes, Shisha is really nice so long as the hookah is reasonably clean. I've smoked it a few times, once in greece where the tabacco was lovely but the first serving was smoked in a right dirty hookah. Tasted like old ashtrays. But yus, tis lurvley.

The father inlaw smokes loads of it but then he is from Saudi :) always brings me some back too propper nice stuff it is cherry and apple Yummy!!
