Hey fellas,
It's my best mate's birthday celebration this weekend, and I'd like to purchase a couple of cigars for us to smoke. No need for a massive expenditure, £10-20 each is fine.

We're not big cigar smokers, just had the occassional, eclectic selection. So, care to recommend? Also, any good websites for next day delivery?

Cheers muchly,
Ant

Cohiba all the way! Finest cigars in the world :) Cuban of course

Failing that, Monitcristos..

Cohibas are pretty strong, and in my opinion aren't that great, I certainly wouldn't recommend them for a first time smoker. I've got Montecristo #4s in my humidor at the moment and I don't think they are anything special either. My Brother In Law smokes RyJ Churchills and they are pretty good.

Personally, from the Cubans, I prefer Ramon Allones Specially Selected, Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure #2 and HdM Petit Robustos.

I'd got for these: http://www.simplycigars.co.uk/hoyo-monterrey-epicures-no2-slb-p-494.html

However, a mate of mine recently gave me some Bolivian and Honduran cigars to try, some he picked up in New York, and to be honest they are excellent. I couldn't tell you what they are, but I've come to the conclusion that Cuban cigars are not really substantially better than those from other countries. If I can find a way of getting these from the states, then I'm moving off cubans.

You are beginners so I assume you want a fairly mild smoke? Do either of you smoke cigarettes? Based on previous cigar smoking that you mention, what sort of flavours do you prefer?
Do you want a mellow smoke or one busting with falvour and aroma?
How long to do you want the smoke to last? Anything between 10 minutes and nearly an hour is possible.

A 20-30 minute smoke is fine. He's a smoker, I gave up about 18 months ago (jesus ).

I've smoked cheapy nasties to some very expensive ones. But frankly, by the time they're smoked we'll have had a few drinks, and neither of us have tastes that are refined nor experienced enough to appreciate particularly complex, powerful flavours. I feel they'd be wasted, and possibly not even enjoyed.

A relatively mild, introductory smoke that remains enjoyable and flavoursome would be perfectly fine. I would however, like them to be chunky buggers, so that we can feel manly.

Cheers for input so far, will browse properly at lunch.

Slight hijack of thread but has anyone been to Cuba and bought cigars? I've got a friend going over there and I thought I would be cool if he got me a box of cigars or something if I gave him the cash beforehand. Does anyone have rough ideas of price in the Cuban peso currency is for a small box of decent cigars?

If I remember, in our hotel, a box of 25 Romeo y julieta number 2 was about £50, can't remember the CCC rate though!

Define 'small box'

You are allowed to export 50 branded cigars and 26 unbranded cigars (made in the fields) per person. However, you are only allowed to bring in 50 per person before you have to pay tax on them.

When I was there in April I think I spend £200 on 100 cigars. However, the CUC rate is pegged to the USD so you'll not get as good value now.

Something like Baz mentioned with the 25 Romeo y julieta number 2 around £50. Nothing more than 25, something like 10/12 ideally I guess.

Really, you are looking at either singles, threes or 25s and I'd estimate that you'll pay about $3.50 per cigar (given I was paying £2 at an exchange rate of about $1.5 - $1.8 to £1).

No idea what the current exchange rate is.

Ok, I was thinking of giving him around the £50 mark anyway. If that can buy a decent 25 box of cigars then ill see what my friend can get me. If not I'll get him to get me different 3's.

Ta for complete and utter thread hijack :p

I'm ordering a couple of Romeo Y Julietas, cheers for advice fellas!
