Hi guys just seen stalker is on offer at steam £6.24 wat a bargin!! I have never played the game before so just wanted to ask for some opinions on the game and what its actaully about. From what i gather is a 1st person shooter looks ok but with mafia coming out next week is it worth a buy?

I bought it recently after seeing so many people rave about it. Might just be me, but I can't get into it at all. The weapons feel horrible and the graphics leave a lot to be desired now (I think there are mods for this, though). The atmosphere looked good, though.

Me too. From what I recall, it took almost a whole clip of ammo (ok maybe a exaggeration) to kill a person which is not every realistic. I recently got metro 2033 which has a Stalker-esque atmosphere and I enjoyed that much more than Stalker.

I guess you will either love it or hate it, depending on if you manage to get into it or not. I've tried twice and almost made it the 2nd time but got bored again after 90 mins or so.

One of the most atmospheric games I've played in a long time, sort of reminded me of Thief actually, that feeling that there's something almost supernatural going on behind you or your being followed.. very dark. Actually its one of those games where you really really do need a headtorch/nightvision for your character, proper darkness.

Lots of people can't get past the dated graphics (get the 2009 mod - its amazing) and the shooting can be a bit hit and miss (literally). But that didn't put me off, I loved it.

Nope. It's very realistic, because you didn't HIT the guy with that whole clip. The ballistics are actually based upon actual real life ballistics, so playing Call of Duty means you're not getting anywhere.

I think it pays to persevere with it, though I haven't played it yet myself, I can use my recent experience of The Witcher. I started off hating it, stopped playing it for about a year or two, then started it the other day, still hated it, but continued and now I love it :D

I'm hoping I like Stalker immediately of course, but The Witcher has taught me to persevere a bit :)

I got it in a steam sale, so not that long ago, and I've struggled to get into it. I might give it another go with some mods to make it look a bit better or something but at the moment I can't see the appeal.

Having fired real weapons its actually very unrealistic. Well it all depends on the shooters abillity I guess. The guy on the game must be a very bad aim :p.

But once you have a decent nato weapon with a scope its a lot better (on SOC anyway)

I found that on CS you have to tune your gun up to get the best out of it. The AK's and shotguns at the beginning are useless, unless you are 2' away from the enemy.

And to answer the OP, yes its worth every penny! As others have said though, you need the complete mod and have to give it some time.

Bought the STALKER pair on Steam this weekend, just firing up and starting to find my feet in Call of Pripyat - liking some of the new changes, such as not being able to sell badly damaged guns etc.

And yes, as Mark A says the weapons can seem a bit "junk" at first but its part of the game mechanics. In COP there's a man who can upgrade your weapons for some cash, so if you add 2 upgrades to reduce recoil, and 1 or 2 to improve accuracy, + telescopic sight, they should improve a lot.

Don't forget, when you're a new stalker you're meant to be a skint, inexperienced n00b using rubbishy old guns, with el-cheapo rusty bullets, and no skills. Also, other stalkers / NPC's that you're shooting at may be wearing better armour than yours, which means your non-armour piercing bullets wont hurt a great deal.
(shotgun to the face tends to solve this problem however) :D

STALKER is an incredible game. The first time I played it I was a little over welmed but give it chance. The second one is a bit pants due to the bugs but the 3rd one is also amazing

Its the atmosphere that makes this game what it is

Is it worth playing through the three games in order or is it ok to skip the first two and just play Call of Prypyat?

utterly overrated game series imo the first one wasn't even playable until 2 years after release was so buggy.
