8800GTS v 8600GT SLI compared

Ok so i went out today and got an 8800GTS 320Mb. OcUK model

Pics first :





Ok so lets start with 3DMARK 06 ( CPU @ 2.7Ghz - GFX stock in both cases )

8600GT SLI - 7871
8800GTS 320 - 8744

Not much of an increase there

Overclocked scores - CPU @ 2.7Ghz

8600GT SLI @ 702/825 - 9238
8800GTS 320 @ 627/852 - 9780

EDIT : Now at 634/969 to give 9950 :)

Not too much of an increase there either, but ive got a new cpu coming next week so should see 10k hopefully.

Now onto gaming

Stalker runs maxxed out at a smooth 45 - 50FPS on the GTS, compared to about 35 - 40 on the 8600GT SLI

Doom 3 now runs totally maxxed out with 16xAA, 8xAF @ 71 FPS, compared to 43FPS with the same settings on the 8600GT SLI

Probably the biggest boost is in the Lost Planet DX9 demo.

Averages about 50 FPS but ive managed to turn on motion blur and shadows and set everything else to high imcluding HDR.

And the best thing is the cost - after selling the pair 8600GT cards its only cost me £40 for the GTS ;)

what screen resolution are you using?

I have just ordered a 8800gts so am looking forward to Stalker with all the bits turned on

If its a 320mb version then you may struggle with all the bells & whistles on, the lighting effects make a big difference.

Did you manage to sell the 8600's for what you paid for them then?! :eek:

Not bad scores from the old 8600's really, I'm surprised how close it was in the 3dmark tests, but I guess the real world of gaming shows where the improvements are.

Yup, i got £70 each for the 8600's :p

Sold them to a mate who was in awe of 9k in 3Dmark.

He thinks hes gonna get 9k now, but hes only got a 3500+ winnie :p

I guess you were all right, even tho they were close in benchmarks, in real gaiming terms the 8800GTS is way way ahead :)
 
I'm still an old-school 1024x768, my 8800 GTS 320MB handles pretty much anything at 8xAA/16xAF and everything else maxed.

lol I know someone who bought an 8600 and said 'it's only 10% slower than your 8800 GTS'. Yeah - that's why two in SLI can't even beat it. Keep dreaming :P

2 8600GT in SLI when clocked returned ony 700 points less in 3dmark 06 than my 8800GTS 320Mb in the same system.

Considering 2x8600GT can be had for £140 or less id say its a very attractive option to anyone who cant afford the 8800GTS, but after having both, id recommecd spending the extra £40 :)
