Guide to unlock a GTX465 to a GTX470

Hmm, it seems like an incredibly dumb idea to ship cards as 465gtx's, with 2 memory chips(or is it more) unused?

THere was also that 470gtx that shipped to that guy but was a 465gtx/460gtx in bios etc.

Is it possible to save a little time Nvidia had companies ship some 470gtx's for review with a 465gtx bios to emulate the performance?

Otherwise this would be the first time in history someones shipped memory, which costs money, and disabled it, its quite literally throwing money down the drain.

Will be very interesting to see if all/any 465gtx's ship as disabled 470gtx's or as "proper" 465gtx's with the right amount of memory on board.

Maybe it really is just 470gtx's being rather unsellable right now and they've decided to rebrand them down rather than admit the 470gtx is a 5850 matching part and price it as such.

If its the later, Nvidia have gone completely mental, most likely 465gtx's will eventually ship as binned and unable to run as 470gtx's with 1gb mem only onboard. Anything else would be bizarre beyond belief.

This seems highly unlikely, I guess these are just review samples or some such.

You could believe possibly unlocking the extra shaders/rops etc but Nividia putting more ram chips on the cards? I think not

I will pop in a word of caution here.

Some of us have been trying this with the cards released to reviewers prior to launch which ARE retail samples. Of the 12 cards we have tested, 4 "unlocked", 3 recognized the BIOS but didn't "unlock" and 5 are now paper weights.

30% unlocked
25% failed
45% bricked
