your thoughts on the super wide monitors

It's not really a question of whether they're worth buying. They're good for watching movies, playing games, working in multiple windows at the same time, etc... but if you had one you'd probably adjust and make use of the extra space. It's not like if you're used to just having one window full screen at a time you'd carry on doing that with an ultra wide monitor.

29" 2560x1080p monitors are the same height as 23" 1080p monitors, so yeah I'd say you'd be better off going for 34" 1080p if you're used to 28" 1080p.
You can increase text size in windows, that's not really a problem. I'm not sure what films would look like on these monitors, does anyone use one to watch films?
I think yes as I just ordered the LG one myself... Its not going to be as hard on the GPU as 4k but I love the wide aspect ratio.. I was testing out two monitors side by side and even though you have the bezel in the middle the wide espect ratio feels so much more immersive so the 34 inch should be as good and no bezel in the way.
The only thing im losing is 144hz but before I got the benq 144hz monitor I had 60hz and I was perfectly fine with that.

Text is exactly the same size as my dell u2311h
Overall the image is sharper than the dell u2311h as well
I can't go back to any other aspect ratio now, 21.9 aspect ratio is just great for all round usage especially films and games.
No black borders FTW!

I have owned a LG 34UM65 and its a beautiful screen with a good looking picture. The wide view is pretty awwsome in both games and movies and to a lesser extent the windows desktop. I would personally recommend not going below 34" inch for 21:9 monitors if you are already use to 27"+ inch 16:9 or 16:10 screens. The vertical coverage would be too low if you do. The 2560x1080 @ 34 inch looks very good and text is super sharp so dont be fooled by the size cause its not as high as a normal 27 inch and the extra pixels on horizontal line makes up for the extra width the monitor has.
2560x1080/21:9 Pro:
1) Looks very good in movies and games
2) Easy to drive vs something like the lg 34um95, requiring not much more power than a normal 1080p monitor.
3) Adds a little value, not much though, to productive work.
2560x1080/21:9 Cons:
1) Not as useful for productivity work as the lg 34um95 or similar models(resolution wise)
2) 21:9 aspect ratio can give you headaches if you are susceptical to it, due to the wider viewing area, like i am(why i dont own it anymore *sad panda*)
3) 60hz is kind of poop, if you are use to 120hz, for anything gaming related at medium to high pace.

Consider a 28" 4K display. I'm really enjoying my Samsung. Gaming is good, remote desktop is much easier, there's a lot more workspace.
You might also consider two 1080p / 1200p monitors - one in portrait, the other in landscape.

That looks awesome, Im guessing thats a superwide film your watching too?
All movies are filmed at a ratio of around 21:9 and have been for years. This is why you get black bands top and bottom when watching on 16:9.
Yes, there a multiple types of Wide Screen, with 21:9 being the standard for film. 16:9 is a compromise between 4:3 and 21:9.

Personally I think my 34UM95-P is the best monitor I've ever used. I don't think I could go back to 16:9 without issues. Next stop is UHD 21:9.

Pffft 34" is where it's at!
Especially for gaming:
Too big for my desk or more precisely would be too wide! 
Would have liked a bit more height, about another half an inch would have been perfect.
Trying to decide if I should get that LED lighting strip you have as well
