Thought I would post this little project as others posting here have helped me do this.
After having my old crappy glass tv stand for 6 or 7 years I decided it was time to change it to something alittle more suitable. My old one was all open so everything inc wires was on show and it wasn't deep enough for my AV receiver so all looked abit of a mess.
I found lots of mods on ikea cabinets so my plan was to mod something to fit the equipment I have and try and tie into the rest of the room.
I decided on the Besta Burs TV unit which I originally wanted in gloss white but when we got to ikea the gloss grey just looked a lot more expensive so we went with that. In the middle section from the bottom up will be Power sockets, XBMC PC, Blu-Ray player. On the right my AV Receiver and on top below my tv just a centre speaker.
We also bought a oak worktop to try tie in with other oak furniture in the room. This is the main part put together still covered in the blue protective film and the untrimmed oak worktop.
The cabinet is not deep enough for my av receiver and all the plugs on the back so I am extending the oak top over the rear and filling in down the sides with matching gloss grey cabinet. This will leave a void in the rear where all the cables can be run and all the connections on the rear of the amp will have lots of room.
The guy who cut the worktop ran the saw towards the front face (I should have known better) and managed to splinter the front corner but I think I can fix this. Also fitted the end strip to hide the ugly inside of worktop. The rear has been trimmed down around 150mm and the end trimmed to match the width of the unit.
Im not going to screw the worktop to the unit so in the future it can be removed and put back to stock if needed. To stop it damaging the gloss top I have fitted a load of soft pads in between it.
The main cupboards on the left and right are normally big draws but I want to put my receiver in the right side and the left just keep as a cupboard so I bought some 153 degree hinges and went about fitting them. Ive never done anything like this before so was abit of a learn as you go along.
The left hand back board I just dilled two holes incase I put something electrical in the future.
The right hand backboard I started but need to buy a saw tomorrow to cut out the opening where all the connections will go through.
Should hopefully get it finished tomorrow. Just need to make the fill peices and mount them to the sides and finish the right side backboard and figure out how to mount the hinges to the actual unit as there is obviously no holes pre drilled anywhere.
