Havent bother checking my 2009 based OC on my i7 920 for a while and today loaded up CPU-Z and noticed that when the system is idle the cpu is still running at 4Ghz not the idel 2.6ghz it should be. I have looked in the BIOS and cant see anything out of place, any ideas why this is happening as all my OC knowledge on this CPU has left me

if the Cpu Features are disabled in the bios it will run permanent 4ghz it is normal if you cpu isnt running 100% all the time and your system is running fine it should be ok

Yeah i believe the CPU features are all enabled in the BIOS. Any other factors that might cause this?

How are you overclocked? A fixed CPU voltage won't allow CPU to idle/clock down, you have to set to normal and use dvid

well the cpu voltage is set to 1.28 volts just like its always been. It used to lower the clock speed when the system was idle and i havent changed anything

I used to have the same board/cpu,and it'll only throttle if CPU voltage is auto which I wouldn't recommend or with dvid which is what I used,if you set CPU voltage to normal and tell me how much it uses in the BIOS I can tell you how much to put into dvid,

A quick guide of how to enable Dynamic Vcore-

1. you need to know voltage needed for your OC under 100% load
2. you need to know your cpu's default voltage (can differ between identical cpu models!)

To find out both get CPU-Z. Load into windows and start CPU-Z, ie > start Linx, when the CPU is at 100% load check CPU-Z voltage. That's your load voltage.

Then go into the bios, set cpu vcore to normal. Lower your multi so you get around 2.8ghz speed at full load (imitating default speed). Boot into Windows and load your CPU 100% again, check CPU-Z while doing that to find out what is your normal voltage!

Now you're almost done, go into the bios again, set/leave cpu vcore at "normal", go into advanced voltage settings and set dynamic vcore at number closest to number derived from -

(VCORE_UNDER_LOAD_OC - VCORE_UNDER_LOAD_DEFAULT = DVID).

Hope this helps using the same mobo. :)

fixed voltage wont allow cpu to idle!!!!!

only auto and dvid, thats with eist enabled, you dont need c1e enabled

i had mine on fixed voltage for over a year and it downclocked fine. voltage didnt of course

ahh yeah the speed might but i know the voltage wont, dvid works well i had mine clocked to 4.2ghz through it

it was 0.8-0.9v at idle and 1.26v at full load

Have you checked Processor Power Management in Advanced Power Settings of any of the power profiles within Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options?

I don't think it's related to me having the CPU voltage manually set, as this is how I've always had my OC setup. I might just take a note of all my settings and reset my BIOS and see if it fixes it

+1 on the windows power options. If you're set to high performance, windows is set to a minimum activity of full throttle and maintains the multi via speedstep.

Ok just reset the bios and now sees to be working but when the system is idle the clock speed drops to 2.2ghz when it should be 2.6ghz?
