Is it just me or do the current drivers suck badly?

Installed on a Gigabyte GA965P DS3 V1.0 which has an onboard realtek hidef sound solution and the output in comparison to my XP install is just awful.

Main issues are:

5.1 speaker setup, no matter how I configure it I cannot get Winamp to fill all speakers, works flawlessly under XP.

5.1 Speaker room adjustment, utter utter rubbish, causes all sorts of issues with th esound being so delayed it just ends up as a big out of time mess even when all speaker distances are set to the same and stood directly in the center of them. All I want to do is increase the volume of the rear set which again, under XP works flawlessly.

Anybody have any ideas or solutions?

I have the same problem, any music played only comes out of the front speaker and two side speakers, it's the same with my audigy 2 soundcard, I've tried onboard realtek also, same thing, but games sound comes out of speakers fine :/

i have a similar problme, wow, codwaw, l4d all work with surround sound, videos with 5.1 work. but if i play music, bf2, aa3 or just video files it only plays as 2.1.... any way to get all speakers working all the time?

I have similar issues with windows 7 64 ultimate and realtek audio

Tried about 3 different versions of drivers without joy :-(

I also have a problem with my hauppauge tv / sat cards
Under xp sp3 all is well , under windows 7 64 , I get audio cracks / pops every 20 secs or so which is really annoying

I don't think it's just Realteak. I've got an Asus P5B with an ADI SoundMAX chipset, running W7 Pro.

Running the SoundMax applet and the speaker test (4.1) gives good tests for all speakers. Audio from Media Player (eg Radio 1) only comes out of one speaker.

I will also say that on my dell 630 laptop which I am also testing out
windows 7 64bit ultimate , I also get some weird sound issues , sometimes
when I go to use winamp and play a track it takes 4 seconds to actually start playing ( sound chip is a sigmatel)
Other times when listening to a track it starts going weird with gargling type effects and pops

Jesus , I tried windows 7 32bit RC and never had any issues at all with audio
Now its pretty much borked most of the time :-(

I have an ASUS p5n-E SLI mobo and I have realtek 5.1 sound onboard.

I too have the same issue of not being able to get my other speakers to work. I did, however, find some drivers which worked. I could see the options in windows sound of setting up more speakers, etc.

The only problem is I think it b0rked the input part of the card, i.e- my mic wasn't working in windows and I use in game voice and ventrilo when gaming online. My favourite past time :D

I also have an old Creative Soundblaster that I managed to install and find drivers (somehow) for. Although when I use over 2Gb RAM the sound cuts out at random. Good times :)

At the moment I have just rolled back to the onboard sound with the installed windows 7 drivers as default. At least I get sound/voice/etc. Hoping might get fixed soon, but I do miss my 5.1 :(

Oh just trying the "newest" drivers from the site now, but I have a feeling they might be the ones I already tried.

On 64B you have to click "install this driver anyway" about 33 times due to the amount of unsigned driver files there are for 64b I guess? Quite annoying.

Holy be-jeebus, after investing some time and effort I THINK I might have cracked the 5.1 sound AND my MIC working too.

I am working remotley so cannot test at the moment but I will investigate further when I get home and report my findings. If it's the case I have a seperate driver that seems to have worked that installs the RealTek custom audio panel, not just drivers.

Edit:- Ok what I have done so far:

I have installed the RealTek driver version: 6.0.1.5911
Dated: 05/08/2009

I found this thread most interesting in sorting the issue (if it is 100% fixed):

http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/1991-windows-7-5-1-surround-problems-realtek.html

My onboard sound has 3 plugs at the back of the motherboard and none for the front of the case. Green, Blue and Pink. The MIC was obsessed with thinking it was in a front pink jack and therefore wouldn't work.

So, basically what I did is this:

Realtek.jpg

I clicked the top right link where my mouse is, which brought up that window in the RealTek options. In Recording I clicked the bottom option to "Seperate all jacks as independant devices".

I was then given the option of a second microphone input which is selected behind that screen. I was then able to adjust settings in windows and can see that the MIC is now in the recording options of the windows sound controller aswell, and I can see that it is detecting noise because the green "sound/noise" bar is moving up and down.

Interesting stuff, I would recommend to all to try the above drivers as I know the sound worked 5.1 originally, I just couldn't get my MIC to input.

Any help I'll be glad to post and I'll update later if it is all 100% confirmed working!

Just as another screenie, I have included my speaker setup from the RealTek manager and windows so you can see that in the windows version I now have Quadrophonic and 5.1 Surround where previously I only ever had Stereo:

when i uninstall thwe windows driver and try to install the realtek ones then reset it always uses the windows one so i cant get the realtek manager :(

how are they connected? and have you tried another program such as foobar2000? that comes with a simple stereo > 4 channel plugin which is enough to check rears are working.

also one other thing to check is how windows is actually configured. right click on the speaker in the system tray >> playback devices >> select your speakers or whatever output you are using, click on configure and run through the wizzard
