I noticed that there are some important updates for vista(such as stability and memory)which arent incuded in the updater.I just checked my update history and these 2 updates are not installed and not available for download. Is this normal?I randomly found a thread here mentioning the stability update as well as an update for ram(64bit systems can use 4Gb)and thats how I found out that I am missing important updates. So,how can I make these updates to be automatically downloaded via the updater? And if I cant do this(which is strange),where can I find them/learn about new updates etc?

EDIT:running vista Business x64

Hey starmanwarz, not all of the updates that are released by Microsoft will necessary be put onto Windows Update. Say for instance this one. This only applies to people that are using 3GB or more of memory, so its pretty worthless to people that only have 2GB of memory or less installed in their systems. :)

Now in my opinion, the two updates below should be put on Windows Update. If you haven't already got them, they are worth getting. Microsoft may decide at a later date to put these two updates on Windows Update.

KB941649 This update improves the compatibility, reliability, and stability of Windows Vista.

• It extends the battery life for mobile devices.
• It improves the stability of portable computers and of desktop computers that use an uninterruptable power supply (UPS).
• It improves the reliability of Windows Vista when you open the menu of a startup application.
• It improves the stability of wireless network services.
• It shortens the startup time of Windows Vista by using a better timing structure.
• It shortens the recovery time after Windows Vista experiences a period of inactivity.
• It shortens the recovery time when you try to exit the Photos screen saver.
• It improves the stability of Windows PowerShell.

This update also resolves the following issues in Windows Vista:

• A compatibility issue that affects some third-party antivirus software applications.
• A reliability issue that occurs when a Windows Vista-based computer uses certain network driver configurations.

As for being able to manually put updates onto Windows Update, their is no way that i am aware of anyway of doing this. Im afraid you will have to go onto the Microsoft website and manually download them. You can visit this page to view all of the Vista updates that have been released. :)

Great post once again Fire Wizard, thanks! It is strange that MS is not including such important updates in the updater though.

Hey starmanwarz, when the very first Performance and Reliability packs were released if I remember correctly, it took Microsoft quite a while to put them on Windows Update. Now weather Microsoft will be putting these two other important updates onto Widows Update, is anyone’s guess. :p:)

So if they should be put on Windows Update, why aren't they? :)

Hey Tute, that’s a very good question. :D

Something of topic,my weather gadget is not working, anyone know why?

Hey starmanwarz again :p, could you expand on that a bit more please? :)

I get a service not availble message on my weather gadget. And something else off topic,I have just ordered 2 more gigs of RAM,can someone link me to that x64 update for 4Gb of RAM?Should I install it first and after my RAM or the other way around? And will I have to return to my old RAM settings before adding the new sticks?

Hey starmanwarz, have you tried downloading a different clock to see if you get the exact same error message?

Regarding the update, you can download it here and more information about it can be found here. In my opinion it will be best to install the above update first, and then revert all of your memory settings back to stock settings and then add the extra 2GB to your system. (Note – You may have to up the voltage on the North Bridge controller a tad, so it will be able to take 4 sticks of RAM.) :)

Yup, is there a very good answer to go with it? ;) :p

Hey Tute, haha :D, I am not to sure myself why Microsoft haven't put these on Windows Update, maybe they are planning to. :p:)

For some reason the RAM one wont install for me, says "this installation does not apply to your system" or something along those lines. Weird, as i use 4GB and Vista Ultimate 64.

Its not the clock I’m having problem with, its the weather gadget :)

Hey starmanwarz, sorry I don’t know where I got the clock from. :p Have you tried uninstalling the weather gadget and then re-installing it? :)

Hey Black Dragon, check to see if you haven't already got the update. That error message normally comes up when you already have the same update you are trying to install, already installed on your system. Is Windows Vista having problems recognising the 4GB of memory? :)

Lol yeah, just checked and apparently it was installed on 15/06/07 which is around the last time i did a reinstall. I did download a beta MS package that had lots of compatability and performance fixes for Vista a few months back that was linked to on these forums. Perhaps that's how i got it :p
