People have Vista already?

That's OEM isn't it?
It's actually Retail, iirc. But you only get that price if you provide a receipt for the pirated version you have - i.e. you have to blame some dodgy retailer, you can't just download a pirated copy and get a cheap legit version.

Actually, yes you can.

The receipt for a pirated version will give you a free copy under WGA.

And yes, it is retail.

Before I can answer your question, I need to be able to understand it. Maybe you should use some punctuation? :)

Will RC1 go dead on Vistas release, or will you still be able to use it? ;)

Most people I know who have Vista now, have it pirated.

And a lot of good it will do them - once the keys are banned they will have an OS that simply cannot have any patches or SP's applied to it.

I too was under the impression that MS want to know where you got the pirated version from.
The scheme is not one designed to help the thieving scum - rather a way of helping those people who bought what they thought was a legitimate copy of the OS or thought they were getting a legitimate copy with their computer and have now found out that wasn't the case.

By MS not requiring you to provide that information the only people who will gain are the thieves and I'm sure MS would have thought of that.

it means they can be using the latest OS before it's released without paying thousands for a MSDN subscription.

I know people who warez copies and will buy vista within a few days of its release, It's like people who download leaked albums/games and then buy the real thing when it comes out.

some people don't like waiting.

Im confused about this. Do they really expect the average home PC user to spend £300 odd on Vista when its released?
Im guessing its just going to be slowly merged in with new PC's as was XP when it was released. Im also going to anticipate that it wont be used by the majority of PC users, who already own XP, until its easily available as pirated software.

why or why  , ye of little faith, Vista was in the making for over 5 years according to Microsoft & it's supposed to be most toughest desktop operating system to date, so much money has been wasted on it's security.

What surprises me is that even before it's initial release date people have cracked the security of Vista. Do you not think if it's been cracked already that regardless what microsoft tries to patch it won't get cracked again. Mind you it's just another Microsoft Rip off of the Gnome GUI.

You have to understand even most of the globe uses Microsoft Products & most of the world also hates Microsoft.

Software EULA of microsoft or any other software states you the buyer have bought a Licence to use the product but the media/software is owned by the relevant company(s). Well that means if you accidently scratch the media and fails to work again, you should get a replacement from the software makers because the media is owned by the Software Company - but you don't you have to buy a new one, that p***** people off.

These software companies don't give 2 hoots about consumers, so ****'em.

My opinion is of the following:

You buy software - the media and the licence is yours - do with it what you please. WELCOME - to the FREE World !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Why should you spend £300? Only Ultimate costs that. Do you need all the features of Ultimate? The C2D X6800 costs £700, but if you don't need the unlocked multiplier, the slightly worse off E6700 costs half that price. We're not talking value for money here - if you want the best*, you pay the premium. That's the case in any walk of life.

Also think of just how much an OS is now. Win 3.11 was tiny - there was substanially less to it. Vista (and XP for that matter) has pretty much everything you need to get a fully working PC going. The sheer complexity of an OS in 2006 means it's not going to be retailing for £120...

* in terms of Vista versions here - up to you if you include Linux, OSX, etc.

Am I wrong in thinking you need to get ultimate to use media centre and remote desktop?

I probably don't need most of the Ultimate stuff - all that encryption stuff and super back-up things that I don't understand for example,

No... they expect the average PC user to do exactly what they have been doing for the last 5 years but with Vista rather than XP. The prices around around the same.

Home Premium can be controlled by Remote Desktop, but you cannot control another PC from the Home Premium Vista.

Aren't there any free VNC's you could use instead?

The other way round. Even Windows 2000 can control another PC - the RDP Client is available for download from microsoft.

I've not really looked hard, but the Vista Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista) states:

The version of Meeting Space included will also allow for interaction (in Home Basic, you may only view meetings), but Remote Desktop sessions may only be received, not controlled, in this edition.
Is it wrong to assume that you can connect up to and control HP, yet you cannot control another PC from that machine?

It could also be interpreted that you can connect up to HP, yet cannot control it (view only).

My apologies if I've jumped the gun.

//edit: looking at other sites, yeah... no RDC. Nothing to stop you using VNC or other means of course, but it's still a shame.

Afternoon all

My first port here, I was going to post about building a PC, but I think i've sorted it now :)

Anyway I'm currently running window2000. I'm thinking of actually buying XP (isn't it a bit risky using a pirated copy of XP now?) so I was hunting around and found this...

No Competitors

You get XP-Media centre, and then when XP is released, you get the Premium home version for free? I read somewhere that only licenced installers can do this though....

"Q. Is this a "Cheap" way of obtaining Microsoft Vista.
A. No ... This product must be pre-install by the System Builder onto the fully assembled PC before the unit ships to the end user. The end user must use the reciept of his fully assembled pre installed PC to claim the upgrade and only original forms supplied by an authorised system builder will be accepted."

yet I read a No Competitors and the bloke said it true, you get XP media centre and then when vista comes out, you send off a vouncher and they send you vista for free!!

Can anyone confirm this?
