Just been to a local computer shop to check out the gfx card selection. I asked if he had anything like an 8600gts in stock? He said that he didn't but he then said he had one superior to it. It was a 7300gt with ddr3 memory and he claimed that it was one of the latest cards to come out. I suggested that it was in no way superior to an 8600gts and that at £84 it was overpriced.

I'm still learning all about hardware etc, so i could be wrong about him and the 7300gt ddr3 card. Was he trying to rip me off?

i always have a luagh walking into high street places that have PC hardware......... rather depressing the rane they stock and the price they charge.

With gfx cards, it helps to know the numbering system, for both manufactueres the first number is the Generation, then the second munber is the Model in that Generation, higher numbers being better. Then sufixes run as GS/GTS/GT/GTX/Ultra for Nv, and GT/Pro/XT/XTX for ATI, in increasing power

So 8600 is one generation NEWER, and a few models BETTER than the 7300, while the 8800 is the same generation as the 8600, but a better model, and a 8800 GTS performs less than a 8800 GTX

It gets complicated when you compare a 7900 for example wiith a 8600, as the former is generaly BETTER than the latter, despite the newer generation. You generaly lose some of the bells and whistles by going down a gen, but you can get a better performing card for your money (for example the older and cheaper X1950Pro beats the 8600GT)

Cheers Richdog, think i'll stick around here for my upgrade advice and give OcUK my business instead. I just woke this morning and thought i'm finally gonna get that new gfx card i keep promising myself. Was concerned about the postal strike, I'll just have to have patience!

I'm really confused as to which card to go for. I want to be able to play GTR2 and PES2008 when it comes out so that they both look and play like a dream!

I currently have 7300gs in sli and was looking at getting the likes of an 8600gts.

Didn't see all the other replies before answering to Richdog's post. Thanks to all of you for your advice and info.

What's your budget? Always start with a budget, we'll take it from there. ;)

i enjoy listening in to upgrade advice at shops like pc world. I try to laugh when i hear someone lying to their customer just loud enough to be heard by the assistant who then tends to panic due to the fact they know their lying to get a sale and dont want any complaints about them misleading the cutomers

7300GT superior to a 8600GTS? LOL!!!!!

And 84 quid!! Wow. They can be had for less than 30 pounds. Just do a google product search.

if you're willing to hold on until November when the new nvidia cards are out I will be buying one of those and selling my 8800GTS 320MB for cheap monies (around £130~) - let me know!

*imagines jidderbys on his weekly pc store rounds stalking shop staff peering at them through aisle after aisle quietly sniggering and snickering, KEKEKEKEKE he shrieks and lets out a silent fart which severely affects people as they walk by*

I noticed a well known high street shop selling FX5200's the other day for about £50... That's just taking it too far, you'd be proper gutted if you spent £50 on one when they were new, let alone spending that now a few years after their release.

Way overpriced. The problem is of course the shop is unwilling to reduce old stock and make a loss on a previous gen card.

That will also depend on the rest of your PC, so its good to provide the specs?

Overprice but why do they have to lie to people

It's great. I can't help myself interferring if I hear too much ****. Once in pcworld a sales assistant was telling a retired couple buying their first pc that xp pro was worth the extra £70 to them and better suited for their needs (a bit of word processing and internet ) as it was far superior to xp home. I had to put them straight. I don't think the assistant was too impressed. He was also trying to sell them a £300 extended warranty on a £700 pc.

A well known retailer that sells computer hardware and other sorts still has as their "latest stock" an agp/pci-e 5200 priced at £60 :D
