My Abit mobo died so im in the process of building a new one (Abit IP35 Pro :) ), so i have a few bits n pieces left over which i can built a new base unit with.

So, as the header says, what was the best S939 mobo? I dont want to buy a new one, so i intend to get one from Ebay as that will be slightly cheaper.

The bits left over :-

Nvidia 7950 GT PCIx
AMD 64 4600+ dual core with AMD cooler
2gigs Corsair ram
Antec Sonata 2 case with 450watt psu
2x SATA HD's

I was thinking that with the right mobo i could make a nice little backup pc with those bits.

Asus A8N.

Plusses
Works with zero driver issues under Windows, Linux and Solaris.
Reliable.

Minuses
The northbridge has a poor fan. Needs replacing with fanless sink or better fan on old boards.

i have a a8n-sli premium and a a8r32-mvp both are good mobos. the dfi nf4 is good too

however what you should do is yes buy a mobo but sell that 4600+ for about £100 (at a rough guess) maybe buy a 6000+ or 7750 for £60 ish leaving you £40+ spare and you ahve just upgraded to a much faster cpu, you can then grab a cheep yet excelent mobo for around £80-100. as you would be paying around £50 for any of those mobos on ebay your not spending much more

you will also have to swop out your ram too, but again ddr2 is pretty damn cheep

My ECS KN1SLI lite has been ok apart from a shockingly poor northbridge fan. Got it second hand off the bay.

Struggled to get decent overclocks with 3x512 + 1x1mb in it, but the fact that it could manage it lowing fsb to 180 and lowering cpu overclock total a bit, was alright.

The ECS will have been hammered too, as it came without a cpu retention socket, so the previous owner was watercooling.

Edit: the ECS only has two 8X PCIe sockets, it doesnt do 16x in single configuration. Something to watch out for.

Yup that would be a half decent spare machine however I think you should sell all that older kit at auction! :o
