OK,

Aftewr having some sort of "episode" I sold all my PC parts lol, an afternoon later I have decided do need a desktop after all lol.

I have specced this:

1TB Samsung F3

P2 x4 965 125w

Gigabyte ud5 mainboard

Titan Fenrir cooler

Along with this memory kit:

OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 Dual Channel (OCZ3OB1600LV4GK) [OCZ3OB1600LV4GK]

Will this be as good as i5 750 overclocked?

I have gone OTT on the mainboard as it should be futureproof for a while, it has sata 3 and usb 3!! :p

It can also take the upcoming 6 core amd should I want one!!!

Where is the catch?

Is the ram 100% compatible?

Well looks good.....I would suggest just either typing out what you want or removing all the blue e.t.c...........Why not buy from OCUK???

Well, anyone who knows which competitor that is already knows where to go to compare, so why would it matter?

Id still be inclined to go i5.

Why?

From what I have read i5 isn't going to get 6 core. At least with am3 I can squeeze one more cpu upgrade out of it, if I wanted to.

I think am3 will even support bulldozer will it not?

The mainboard I have picked is one of the dearer am3's but it has usb3 and sata3 so I wont need add in cards or anyting.

I gather your intention is to overclock? If so, I too would be inclined to go Core i5. It's well known that the Core i5 750 and Phenom II X4 965 perform very similarly when they're both at their default frequencies, indicating a clear clock for clock performance advantage on the Intel platform. This isn't really a problem if you don't want to overclock your processor and if we want to talk about the future, Socket AM3 should hopefully support their new "Bulldozer" architecture that's due next year.

As an overclocker, the answer is quite simple. In my experience, the Core i5/i7 is easier to reach 4.00GHz stable and beyond. Combined with the Core i5's clock for clock advantage, it'll be the quicker one of the two. I know that this won't go down well amongst a lot of people but I also feel that spending £140 on a Socket AM3 motherboard defeats the entire "value for money" advantage that the platform tends to have over P55 and X58. I will conceit however that certain motherboards are more likely to have future CPU support than others and the 790FX UD5 is one of them.

I suppose this will come down to what you'll use your computer for. As far as high resolution gaming is concerned, there's usually little in it between the two platforms purely due to GPU dependancy but if you use a number of CPU dependant apps, then perhaps swinging the Core i5 way isn't such a bad idea. :)

Well i have a AMD PII 965 downstairs with all my components in my boxes still.

I have got tht ram in the box too... if i build it any time soon ill post on here again saying either its good or bad xD

I only use office, web browser and a bit of gaming. I hear what people are saying about i5 but I think there isn't much in it for gaming. Am3 also has the added advatnge of 6 core and beyond.

I think I'll go am3, even with the expensive board it still will work out cheaper in the long run.

Out of interest, what cheaper boards are considered good? I guess I will loose sata 6gb/s, which I wanted incase larger and faster SSD's become affordable this year and in 2011/2012.

Well you can get the little brother of the Gigabyte which has USB3 and Sata 6gb/s...Not sure on the name........I would say am3 is the way to go
w1llyg can you configure your trust as i want to ask you something
