Hi,

I'm so bored of waiting for GT5...

What are the best PC alternatives and why?

..also I'm a tad biased against anything using steam.

The closest thing to GT on the PC for me is GTR evo

Very nice balance between sim/arcade play just like GT though it edges more towards the Sim world. Your need race 07 to play it but you can get the pack on steam for £16.99 you can also install the TOP GEAR test track for it which is brilliant fun and a very good digital representation of the offical track. Games also full of real world tracks and cars.

If you want the best sim on the PC though for me that's Live for speed only a hat full of real world cars and no real world tracks not that it matters.

You also have rfactor, royal pain in the butt as theres so many mods and tracks you have to download as the stock game doesnt come with much content wise..

I racing and net car pro are to serious for my liking.

Interesting.

I have Grid on PS3, must dust it down and take another look, from memory I hated the handling, not that realistic.

I like the real tracks a lot, Spa, Nurnburgring, Le Mans etc, and real cars are nice too.

Also like the idea of the Top gear test track, try to beat the stig etc..ha ha

Steam...long story, now personal preference to avoid it if poss.

Not a grid fan myself imo it handles very poorly and is made as a arcade racer from the offset.

My advice is grab gtr evo its pennys now your get it less than 20 quid everywhere i would have thought in the race 07 bundle.

If at a later date you fancy a very true to life sim then Live for speed is the game for you.. No monthly subscriptions free content updates, next update gets the new Vw scirocco which LFS as done with VW so it will be extremly realistic in looks and handling..

Not having many real world cars doesnt matter all the cars in it are based off a certain class ie the little 1.3 GTI hatchback handles like a little 106/205 or a old clio etc etc and the tracks are superb Aston is just like SPA:) And for £24 its a steal

My advice is also GTR:Evo + race 07 bundle. Plenty there to get your teeth into. Do you have a wheel?

Grid only works for me with a 360 pad, just cannot get my DFP to handle acceptably at all. It's a fun game besides that, but don't expect realism. It does look stunning, best graphics I think.

GTR:Evo is a nice balance, should be fine with a pad or wheel, I use my DFP and it's great fun, just make sure you tweak the settings for your wheel right, then it's amazing.

Live for speed with a wheel is just sublime on the realism/handling front. Graphics are dated, content is small, but the handling and physics are nigh on perfect with my wheel. So if that's what you're after LFS is the answer.

@ OP If your interested In Life for Speed at all and have a wheel Give LFS a try if your a racing fan. I was a long time GT fan myself playing it all the way from GT1. I've never found such a great on-line multilayer racing experience as LFS miles ahead of GT for example 32 car grid are awsome to watch/race in you also get a built in live for speed cam. just press 2 at the end of race to save a full replay which you can watch from any cam you want.

Heres a great video on why i play LFS :D

I actually quite like the simple raw new of LFS graphics and with plenty of AA and AF plus a bit of tweaking in Nvidia control panel and live for speed looks very nice indeed. Id also recommend the high res track pack found in the addon section over at the official website.

Given there's no jaw dropping effects but visually it looks very realistic when tweaked. The models and tracks are very detailed imo and it cuts out all the need for speed style blur and crap.

Heres some screens if your interested that show how well LFS can look.

I do have a wheel, a Logitech G25 (shame the support is so poor on PS3 so far) but can't currently use pedals as my right foot is in plaster, thus the source of some of the boredom ha ha, could just use my left foot - need to sweet talk the gf into getting the wheel back down from the attic!

I'm not that fussed about racing online, just putting together a good lap and then slowly bringing the lap times down like you would for real. The time I've invested in learning the Nurnburgring is quite scary.

LFS looks like a good candidate, I've got the demo and so can go for a spin as it where...

GTR2 is probably the best IMO, but only feels good to me at about 280degrees of rotation and is pretty limited.

LFS's G25 support is ace, as are the physics but the steering is dull (only weight...)

rFactor is great and has great mods (RaceX, CDTP '06 and MMG F12007 are all awesome especially with your choice of FFB plug-in)

Try GT Legends, bit more like GT5...

With LFS, you can do offline 'hotlaps'.
These are verified by the game for cutting etc, and you can upload them to LFSWorld to compare with others. The competition for some of the world record times is fierce, some are more beatable if the track/car combo is not very popular.

I've owned it since 2003 and I still play regularly, it is a little bit addictive :)

Richard Burns Rally hasn't been mentioned yet, but it is another great older game. There are mods with updated cars etc, if you fancy.
Being rally it's just you against the clock, but the satisfaction of completing some of the stages is something else, rally-ending accidents are frequent when you are pushing hard.
