I've got the following:

x1710
T7200 2.00 Ghz C2D
2Gb of the 667Mhz Ram
Seagate Momentus 7200.2 (120Gb)
nVidia 7950GTX

Couple of things:

What rigs are you guys running?
What upgrades have you made?
Anyone running modded bioses (main or gfx)?
What GFX drivers are you using?
What add-ons have you got for it (pcmcia cards?)

Anyone got any good resources - logged into the Dell forums but they're not brilliant - anywhere else any good?

My spec is in my sig. But just in case it's:-

M1710
T7600 @ 2.33GHz C2D
2GB 667Mhz RAM - Corsair Value Select
Seagate Momentus 7200 (100Gb)
Nvidia 7900GTX

Only things I upgraded were to add faster HDD (it came with 120Gb 5400rpm Seagate Momentus) and increase the RAM from 1GB to 2GB. Oh and I just added a bluetooth card so that I can 'activesync' my smartphone without having to plug it in.

I'm just using the latest GFX driver from nividia's site. Should probably look around for a modded one though. Haven't really got any resources or extras - you can't get PCMCIA cards for the M1710, as far as I'm aware, as it has the more modern but very seldom supported express card slot instead (slot looks the same but is only half as deep), I found this out when trying to plug my TV capture card in!!!

I would definately be interested in knowing if the CPU or the GPU are overclockable in this notebook.

Cool - thanks for that: I found the following v. useful:

Notebookforums

That page goes straight to the 17+ inch Dell section. They also have great links to various modded GFX drivers and other stuff. I take it your 7600 is the non 'G' version - so locked? There is an interesting thread on there about the fact that there is no difference between the 7600 and 7600g apart from the cpu id, so with a hacked bios you should be able to overclock your chip to the 2.83Ghz 'sweet spot' - doesn't look like anyone has done it yet - but worth keeping an eye out for.

I only have the little one, so will be looking more for the latest drivers to clock the card.

Cheers for the steer on the express slot - never knew that - any idea what sort of stuff it's designed for - not come across it before?

So - stuff on my wish list:

1. Oc the 7950GTX
2. Swap out the wireless card for an 'N' one that's compatible with my Belkin
3. Find something useful for the express slot
4. Work out why I can't get Red LED on the back (comes out green for some reason
5. 4Gb + Vista x64 ???

What's everyone else planning?

I just got rid of Vista 64 as it was a bit of a pain and slowed the system down by a noticable amount. Don't think your CPU supports 64bit anyway.

I'm maybe planing on upgrading to the 7950 GTX and then definatley going to look into the overclocking thing - mine isn't the T7600G, which is a bit of a bugger :(

My M1710's specs:

C2D T7400 (2.16Ghz)
2GB RAM
160GB 5400rpm
7950GTX

The hard drive isn't too slow, but I'm going to replace it with a 200GB 7200 soon. Not done any mods to it as I simply can't be bothered. Tryed using nTune to OC the gfx but that caused system instabilities, tryed modded gfx drivers but exactly the same outcome.

Have to say, that's what's holding me back - the machine runs sweetly at the moment, not sure I want to start having the issues people have had with the hacked drivers, though the new nVidia ones are supposed to include mobile chips now, so maybe it's time to upgrade from the stock Dell ones.

I upgraded my hdd the the Momentus 7200.2 which I love. Not sure if the Hitachi e7K200 is faster though - can't find any comparison benchies. I couldn't save my installation on the new drive unfortunately. Even using Acronis to clone everything (including the odd Dell partitions) it wouldn't boot off the new drive - had to do a full re-install - no loss really!

Hi, im using the Dell 1710 and finding that I dont really need to upgrade it yet.

T7300
8600gt
2gb Ram + 2gb Readyboost
160gb 5400rpm
Vista 32

I might in the future upgrade to the 7200rpm hard drives but how did you guys find the battery life after upgrading?

Also might overclock the 8600gt a bit, seems to run at 50-60c so could go higher hopefully.

I haven't noticed a penalty for the 7200 drive, but then the momentus is a very energy friendly drive! I still get about 2 hrs on the saver mode. Would you mind running a 3Dmark - would love to know how those new 8600gt's compare to our 7950GTXs?

I thought all of the C2Ds were 64bit chips? Which ones are not and therefore wouldn't take Vista 64?
