Working in Oz/ NZ

Good question I work in a simlar role ,maybe more 2 nd line though.

What sort of accommodation can you realistically afford to stay in?

Expats forum is full of useful stuff thanks for the link;)

No problems, accommodation will depend on your income.

Before getting a job I would just find a cheap but reasonable flatshare with a few people. This gives you a roof over your head and you get to meet people.

Once you have a job it's up to you if you stay or go.

Below is a link to the NZ Salary review 2008 for a ton of jobs.

Just add 15-20% for Australia rates and remember to convert into Australian Dollars from NZD.

A systems admin with 1-3 years experience would look to get $55-75k NZ. SOo converted to Aus dollars and add 20% = $55-70k Australian dollars.

I have no idea! Though that's mainly due to me not having to worry about that to start with as I would very likely be staying with my girlfriend's family :p

IT is in demand. Pitch up, take your time and find a job you like.

Brisbane is pretty hot with an average IT market.
Sydney is going to be the best payer but everything is more expensive there.
Melbourne everyone loves because it's a really good place, not as hot as the others (it is some times but not all of the time) and generally well regarded by everyone.

So would I be best starting off in the north carins and working down?? Or starting south and working up with regards to get the best of the weather ??

Or would starting in sydney and staying there for a week or so and get my tax number and weigh up the pros and cons then ??

I'm not overly fussed about what work I do to be honest

Sorry about all thee questions just eager for more basic info and then I can start getting a rough plan in my head etc etc

Really appreciate all the replies

If I were you i'd go on holiday for a few weeks first, stay in hostels, look at local jobs, speak to IT recruitment agencies and see what happens.

Start in Sydney, open a bank account, get a tax number, do all that crap while chilling out. Then get the bus up to Brisbane and do the same, then down to Melbourne. Stay in hostels so you meet some young people and have fun in the evenings.

I think that was sort of my plan in the back of my mind :p

I'm planning on taking £2.5k more if I can is that enough or would I need more??

EDIT obviosly would have my return flight ticket

You don't really want to be in the north in the summer months.

1. It's really really hot (and the wet season)

2. The water's fully of jellyfish so places you can swim are limited.

You have to visit Cairns or Port Douglas as some point though just to go diving off the great barrier reef. Make sure you go on a boat that goes to the outer reef as they're usually a little less busy and have a wider range of fish.

As everyone has said. Finding work really isn't a problem. I came over 2.5 years ago on a working holiday visa and got a job in IT within 3 weeks starting on $60,000 a year. My salary has more than doubled in that time, if you know your stuff and have English as a first language you're laughing.

If you stay in Sydney then Bondi and Manly are probably the two most popular areas for tourists to stay. I'm not kidding when I say that over 50% of the people living there are English.

Just be careful, once you're here you'll never want to leave. no one does.

My IT skills are limited to 2nd line support on software etc. I don't mind doing bar/waiter work anyhow.

SO ideally if i'm going jan/feb time I should be starting down in the south and working my way up correct ??

Is the weather always fine and sunny in the northern parts ??

Thanks again

I think starting down south would probably be your best bet at that time of year.

It's never really that cold anywhere...

It's getting on for winter now and today's forecasts are:

Cairns 28c
Sydney 20c
Melbourne 23c
Perth 23c

I went to Cairns around this time last year and it was lovely. In the summer it's very hot and humid and prone to heavy rain. But it's hot rain that gets you wet but doesn't really cool you that much.

Cool thanks for the advice will no doubt follow that route. So did you get a sponsership to stay over there for 2.5 years or have you got a wife etc?? hope you don't mind me asking.

been thinking of doing this since I was 18 29 now! At frst was just idea , but the more i'm thinking of it the more i'm loving the idea!

Did anyone who has done this get home sick at all?? that myonly other big worry

My girlfriend was born in Australia although she's lived in England since she was 6.

I'm now on a defacto spouse visa. You have to prove you've been living together for a year before you entered the country. Getting all the forms filled in and all the evidence is very stressful. They made me wait 9 months to find out if I'd got it or not and they were the worst of my life knowing I might be chucked out at any time.

If you've got a degree or work in a field that is understaffed and have the required experience then a 457 visa is the way to go. There's a massive 300 odd page book of job's they need people in and the experience required. A good immigration law will cost around $2000-$3000 but will pretty much guarantee you a visa or they won't take the case.

I've not been homesick at all, msn and phone calls keep me in touch with the folks. My girlfriend has been pretty homesick but I think women are generally a bit more emotional about these things. When I get up each morning and go for a run by the sea I know I've made the right choice.

STOP IT your making me jealous already. On a serious note thanks for taking the time out.

Keep an eye on this thread sure i'll need some more advice in the near future ;)
