Hi All

Ive been hanging around (but not posting much) in the photo forum for a while now and am after some pointer/advise....

I have been invited to Silverstone tomorrow (corporate hospitality ;)) ive never been before and am obviously really looking forward to it.

I bought myself a Nikon D40X with a 18-55mm lens and have also bought a Nikkor DX 55-200mm VR lens. (couple of months ago)

Having never been to motor sport event net alone F1, im looking for help on how to shoot/setup camera while im there to get some good shots, ive got 6GB worth of SD cards and a tripod that ive borrowed.

I dont know where we are going to be as far as track position, but im hoping we are close...enough.

starter for 10, do i set the camera to shoot RAW or fine jpg?

ps. i promise ill post the best one's (if there are any) when i get back.

Ill be there with my 450d which i have only used once since last weekend...

I'm realy hoping to actually get part of a car in at least one picture......as long as the rain stays away.... I'm going sunday too, so i suppose tomorrow will be a practice day for me too ;)

If it all goes bad ill upload off this thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17891234 to my memory card:rolleyes:

From most of the pics i've looked at this week 1/160'ish looks like a good speed, i might try some raw too, as i'll need to do lots of pp..

ok, tried to take pics today, couldnt get the best spot but tried to do my best.
god these bloody cars fly past fast, panning will do nothing unless you can see them coming and get the pic way before they are anywhere near alongside you!

i have quite a few blurry ones :D

You'll be wanting to do something like the following

Use the 55-200 VR lens but set the lens VR off or to a panning mode.
Set camera to Tv (shutter priority mode)
Put your shutter speed to 1/250 (initially)
Put the ISO to 100
check to make sure nothing is flashing in the camera at you
If stuff is flashing, put up the ISO until it stops flashing!
Have fun!

You can experiement with lowering the shutter speed and taking time to pan accuratly to get blurred backgrounds and the car in perfect focus. :) If you lower the shutter speed and stuff flashes again, increase the ISO again.

Yeah, some good shots!

Looking at your settings, they're about right as well, so good job.

# Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/160 second = 0.00625 second
# Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 16/1 = F16
# Exposure Program = shutter priority (4)
# ISO Speed Ratings = 200
