I've just installed the latest cyanogenmod ROM on my Desire and I want to create an EXT3 partition on my SD card but I'm having problems. I've tried Rom Manager but that doesn't seem to work, it just boots into Recovery mode and does nothing. I then tried Gparted (using ISO on a CD) which I have used before and this couldn't see my SD card.

Are there any other free apps/tools which will allow me to create a FAT partition and EXT3 partition easily??

you can do it from recovery

Select ‘Partition SD Card’.
Select the EXT size that you want (128M, 256M, 512M, 1024M, 2048M or 4096M).
Select 0M as the Swap Size.
That’s all.

i think rom manager is booting to recovery because you have to do it from recovery, just follow the above instructions and you should be fine.

That may be the problem though. ROM Manager says I have ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 installed, but when I boot into recovery, it says ClockworkMod v2.5.0.7. I've been through every option, and there is no "Partition...." anywhere.

Use this recovery. Scroll down to where it says free version, download and put the apk on your memory card, install it with appinstaller from the market and then you can flash that recovery to your phone. It can partition your memory card and is quite excellent as well.

Are you creating the partition for A2SD?

A better option would probably be to flash HBOOT tables, this repartitions the phone's internally memory leaving more room for apps. See http://alpharev.nl/. This gave me plenty of space for apps when i was still using my desire and performance should be better than using A2SD
